|
|
I am building a stock 1600 dual port. I ordered a camshaft and now have found out it is to tight and walks out of the bearings. How can I tell if my old camshaft is still good. Can I reuse this with new bearings and lifters.? |

you changed the post...
if I remember you said the cam was a regrind and had a +2, the +2 signify s a lash gap percentage due to machining tolerances of the gears and case(stock cams came with lash sets of -2 up to +2 IN 1 increments)
I am pretty sure rotating one way will allow the gear to walk out, and the other way is fine
you can check the cam for straightness with V-blocks, you can set a feeler gauge on a flat surface touching the gear(still in v-blocks) and by rotating you should be able to tell if the gear is out of round _________________ My 1975 Beetle Build Updated 8-21-12

Yes I changed it. I read several post and It seemed as though I needed a new camshaft/gear. The new cam I bought does have a +2.
when I rotate the assembly clockwise it lifts out of the bearings and seems to bind. counter clockwise if I remember was ok it may have gotten tight also.
When I rotate it and it starts to lift out I noticed that it moves the bearing from being flush with the case. So whats my next step Im lost |

set it up in a v-block and check for straightness
OR
you'll need to torque the case halves together and feel for tight spot, crank/cam should rotate pretty freely, Thrust cuts are weird sometimes, and force the gears to move objects is an unintended way when unhindered
to check gear lash, (I think range is .002") place a feeler gauge between the teeth of the cam and the crank, OR rotating just a couple degrees look for little to no play in the gears _________________ My 1975 Beetle Build Updated 8-21-12

If the old lifters were dished badly then the cam is worn out too.
Put the old gear on the new cam. Have the cam reground. Get a different cam, ect. |

I have heard different schools of thought on regrinding stock cams. If a cam is worn, can you take it to an automotive machine shop and have them regrind it, or does that just eat away the heat treated surface of the cam? I feel like the material used in the old cams is better than many of the new stock replacements... _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

There are only half a dozen shops that regrind VW cams that I know of.
Most of the high volume re builders, gex, mofoco, ect, use reground stock cams and lifters. They hold up about the same as stock, which isn't really all that impressive IMO, but it is good enough for most. |

MoFoCo isn't to far from me. I also have a local automotive machine shop that has done a lot VW stuff. They do really nice crank regrinds. I might contact them as see if they have the capability to grind lifters and cams. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295
