it appears that the 3D technology has not yet advanced beyond making cute little plastic octopuses! _________________ 1963 Beetle

what kind of plastic does the scanner use? any way to get rid of the record type ribs on the models? 3D printing stuff is pretty sweet. what are your dimensional constraints to scan or print? _________________ Fritz Custom Products

There is a company here in town that makes them and for $40 it's all yours, no jig required. Pretty good stuff I have two of them... _________________ Stupid people do stupid things. |

^^^ I want one that's 100% + % for aluminum shrinkage, to use as a reusable pattern for casting them in aluminum...
I thought most guys, or maybe just the most geeky, used cadd files to print parts.... _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

Thread bump.
So no one else has interest in a 3D printer?
I noticed the op mentioned scanning parts. While that is very cool and I have yet to to get a scanner set up, I have a printer I share with my dad.
He is a design engineer and I've been learning how to use the program solid works. It's amazing what we've printed up for fun and what we've made to fix household things. _________________ "In case I don't see you, good afternoon , good evening, and goodnight."

The wheel on my dishwasher upper rack broke last night. Can't order just the ten cent piece I need, have to order the whole twenty dollar kit.
Was just thinking it would be nice to have a 3d printer for just this kind of crap around the house. _________________ Royals 2015 World Champions

Tbird,
I understand the frustration. The cheap chrome plated bezel on the hose sprayer of my sink broke. Thanks to our printer, we just printed a grey bezel to replace it. We've also made new eyeball jets for the pool. Leslie's pools wants around 25-35 bucks a pop. Poof, 10 hours later, i've got my own custom designed bright orange eyeballs in the pool. I think they are rather fetching if you ask me.
Here's the printer company that we bought from. I have the Rostock Vmax 2.

The deal is, you can get it for a grand, (really cheap consider the footprint size that it can handle) but you have to build it yourself. Now, the directions for it are among thee BEST step by step directions (PDF) that I, or my engineer father have ever seen. In some steps, it even has quick youtube tutorial links. all the from building it, to setting up firmware, installing it on the computer, how to tune it in, everything. There is nothing that went unnoticed.
Oh, last note: the software for it is online, and free. Open source. It doesn't get any better than that.
PS: here is a forum on 3d printing
