I have an Empi merged 1 5/8 setup. Seems like a new design compared to their older styles. Anyhow, what type of exhaust gaskets does everyone use? I like the idea of ones I can reuse, or at least ones I don't have to change too often. The supplied units came with the exhaust and are already disintegrating after a month of driving! The backfires are getting real old. Anyone make nice thick exhaust gaskets that seal really well?

Thanks

I've been using CB's graphite ones for a few years now with no problems, but using an A1 header with decent flanges, make sure yours are flat or you will always have issues

None works good if you have thick flat flanges.

I've heard that but never tried it, guess I don't trust the alignment of parts these days, or ever really when it comes to aircooled exhausts. Always has been an issue to find quality headers here in Aust, thats what drove me to pay $1000 for my first A1 (shipping kills, its worse than speed)

I have the CB copper ones. I got them before they had the graphite ones. I re-use them with no issues and no leaks.

I use ones from a Vanagon. You can get them from most FLAPS and you can reuse them and the do not blow out.

Same... I use the Vanagon gaskets with a 1-5/8" exhaust.

yep - these ones for cars with bigger exhausts. There are also smaller ID ones available. They have a great 'fire ring' that helps prevent delaminating making them last a long time, even with repeated disassembly.

Apart from a little copper-based thread lube, you will soon regret using any type of 'goo' on exhaust systems....

Awesome, thanks for the replies guys!!

As to those Vanagon gaskets, where exactly do you get them? Would Oreilly have them or do I need to go to a VW specific jobber?

Van Café, santa cruz CA sells them, great vanagon supplier, they have a website and do a lot of mail order

I have 10 years on the same set of vanagon gaskets and I've had the exhaust on and off at least 15 times for various reasons. Zero leaks. They seam to last forever.

Bump
Legit question- regarding the vanagon gaskets, does the metal side go on the head or on the header?
Thanks,
Rev.

I could never get a definitive answer to that question so I always installed metal side to the head and fiber side to the exhaust flange.

I have used them both ways and it did not matter. I just ordered another set from CIP $12.00 for a set of 4
