More on the mating of the engine and transmission. I'm using a #22 install manual, I don't have anything newer. So there are FOUR bolts to mate these. I have a note in my manual, which I wrote in after the parts arrived, that there was no stud in the upper driver's side position. Spoke to The Man, and a 100mm bolt and nut are now used in that location. Makes sense. Anyway, just in case someone else is as dense as I am, hope this helps!

kourt, like the idea of cruise control, but if I add anything else to this project, it'll be snowing again before I can drive it!

Howdy,

I installed the GoWesty cruise on my Zetec yesterday. Honestly, the install has nothing to do with the Zetec--the whole install is done at the front end of the van.

I found a VW cruise control enabled turn signal stalk on eBay for starters...

The control module mounts far up under the dash just to the right of the ashtray. The throttle cable interface routes down through the main grommet to the throttle cable box under the gas pedal.

There is no margin for slack in the install--you need to pay careful attention to the instructions.

I happened to get lucky and got the throttle cable slack set properly on the first try. I went out and it worked like I expected to immediately. I know others have not had that kind of luck.

All in all, a good product. They are repackaging a Rostra system with some value added special items from GW and the whole system is a good setup in my view.

Thanks for this. I think I will persue this next holiday sale at GW.

The good news is I installed the Zetec and tranny into the Westy.

The bad news is I spent the night barfing and I'm too sick to do any work.

I had a close call like that during my install. The wife got sick--so I just spent more time in the van. I even considered sleeping out there, but messing with routine creates more problems.

I am still working on an over fueling situation with my Bostig conversion. I am pretty sure it is a small leak in the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm, and will test that at lunch today.

Muffler update: I returned the Magnaflow (inlet was too big), and ordered the Walker 17904. The remainder of my AC fittings are arriving this week, and I'm almost done with all the things that require me to crawl under the van--a goal I have been looking forward to for some time.

My A/C fittings are due in today or tomorrow, we must be on parallel paths!

I slept 14 hours straight and I'm able to eat something, but not picking up a wrench until I'm 100%. Too easy to screw things up even when I'm feeling OK.

Question for everyone:

I have what appears to be a vacuum line going from the engine bay all the way to the front, entering the dash by the passenger side headlight. Does anyone know what it's for? I'd hate to cut it and find out it connects the FrimFram to the Flapadoodle Gearing. I think it came off a silver dashpot looking device on the engine, but I don't know for sure.

Does it connect to the brake booster on the back of the master cylinder?

If it's a very stiff, black, vinyl tubing, it goes to the brake booster.

You need to connect that to the intake manifold with a check valve inline. See page 74 of the installation manual.

Spectre intake update:

Use the Bostig standard air box first. It will work better with the default tune file Bostig sends. You want this standard setup to make initial troubleshooting more consistent.

I'm saying this because I'm having an over fueling problem and the Spectre intake is a suspect that we are ruling out at this time. Once I've got a good run with the default air box done, Bostig might offer a special tune to accommodate the Spectre intake.

I don't want my little mod to be the pariah of Bostig's existence.

Here's some photos of my install:

This is the Spectre install without the heat shield jacket.

Here it is with the jacket.

kourt,
Thanks for the answer but the vacuum brake booster line going to the Intake Manifold is maybe twice the diameter of this line. That one I understand, and it's also on the opposite side of the van.

This runs down the passenger side past the radiator and enters underneath the dash near the passenger side headlight. Maybe came from the charcoal canister? No one has run into this?

That could be a vacuum assisted cruise control line. If your van ever had cruise control of this type, such a line would be necessary.

kourt,

you're a lifesaver! (well, some kind of candied mint.....) Yes, I did have cruise control! Can I just cut it off, or do I have to block it off, too?

Mine had cruise control and the hard plastic line that you mention sounds like exactly that, it was from the cruise.
I just taped it off and left it thinking it may have a place in some future cruise control I might install.

I was really bummed out when i read your comments about the bostig tune not beeing compatible with the spectre intake. The bostig intake mods seem like a pita and was planning on going the spectre route. maybe Bostig will get a tune for it soon. My engine is about ready to go in. Thanks for all your input here.

Howdy,

Well, we haven't totally convicted the Spectre intake of the over fueling problem yet. Frankly, my last data log (taken during lunch today) shows over fueling still, even with the standard Bostig intake (or, I'm not reading the logs properly, but I believe it still shows a +10% long term fuel trim condition).

I'm going to have to open up the fuel system and look for blockages soon if this keeps going on.

I think you'll be fine with the Spectre in the long run, but Bostig really wants to have a consistent setup. I'm sure if any of us ran a business with a standard to uphold we would ask for the same.

DeanZimmer, Thanks, I'll do just that.

sailboat100,
We can't expect Bostig to adjust for things that we add to our install that they didn't develop. They don't know anything about the modifications, and how it affects the system. They can only back up the system as they designed it. It would become a Pandora's Box of endless changes....

Bostig isn't against trying new mods, but you have to expect to deal with it on your own.

Brian,
Don't know why your posts duplicate duplicate duplicate themselves.....

The ceramic looks like a white piece of foam, not what you'd expect.
