Thanks for reviewing the thread again! I decided to replace the opening mechanism on mine before install (still intimidates me...) and didn't want to search all the pages for the link.
I bought this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006JFK8A2/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 because I have a right hand (as looking at the window from the inside). The link posted above is for a left hand. Haven't installed it yet but will review it once installed. _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

Read & followed directions. Works just like the plan says. (Except that the small center end shims (center of the sandwich) weren't needed on mine.) One down and one to go!

That looks great man. Mine are disassembled and ready to be polished, and have new seals put in, however, I got side tracked with my A/C project that I have been feverishly working on. _________________ 1989 Westfalia Vanogan GL, 2.1 |

Thought I'd add mine to the list.
Did all new seals, new rivets and screws, did my frames in black(satin rattlecan)...All the glass will be tinted to 10% soon.
A couple of notes, the silicone didn't hold for me, it delaminated during the first attempt at install
So back to square one, I used JB Weld to make the sandwich.
I used 1/16" flat stock from the hardware store, and a 60grit flap disc to refine the shape. flap disc works fast...use a wet rag to keep the frame cool
...about $40 for all the supplies
I made this window exact size to the window I took out of this hole, and it makes the jalousie a scary tight fit.
Jalousies frames are not as strong as the slider frames.
I took all the glass/frames out, and installed the main frame first, then installed the glass/frames...took a lot of the OMG factor out of the situation, and made it a easier one man job
I still have a slight bow in the upper frame, I have to massage out
I would suggest for those of you doing a tintop window, maybe go about 1/8" undersize..to make life easier

Curious, did you use a new Vanagon window seal and it split? I used the cut sheet in the front of this thread, but found the dimensions were not ideal and did exactly what you did. I made the jalousie the exact same size as the vanagon window. With a new seal and my wife, it went right in. I recall the build sheet did make it too large. One of the better upgrades. Thanks for posting. _________________ ☮️ |

Reused my old seal, seemed to be in good shape
The seal split about an hour later. noticed it in the pics first |

I think you will find it goes in easier with a new seal. Post back. _________________ ☮️ |

yeah sounds like it was(is) under some serious tension..
may want to shrink it 1/16in on L & W
mine is a little loose.. I only added a strip to the bottom/base. and need to push it into the rubber seal a little more (for cosmetic reasons) it seals and functions fine as it is loose. _________________

Thanks for the tip. I just picked up a single Jalousie window that I will install in the siding door of my Syncro tintop (current window is broken)+ the crank knob is on the left (forward). |

I think you will find the jalousie window is too long for the syncro slider door. Unlike the early years, the later slider window is a bit shorter than the left side window.
Not saying it won't work though. Just pay attention to the measurements. Post up your results. I have an 87 syncro in the beginning stages and at some point would like to have jalousies in both windows like our 82 has. Good luck. _________________ ☮️ |

I am preparing for doing this mod. I purchased two jalousie windows for this project, then found two more for a good price so picked them up as well.
So far I have taken three of them apart cleaned them up and replaced the seals with the wolfsburgwest seal kit.
I did not replace any of the rivets or mechanisms, but they all seemed to work fine and not need replacing.
For cleaning an polishing I used a rubbing compound with 00 steel wool and then some polishing compound and elbow grease. This is not necessarily a difficult task to take the frames apart clean them and replace the seals, but it was VERY time consuming. The seals can be frustrating, but doable. I also re-screened two screens I had.
Next step after I finish up the fourth window is to get some aluminum stock and follow the instructions on the first post to build up the frame to fit the vanagon window. My plan is to do the window above the sink and the back passenger window.

Yes, adding the aluminum pieces is going to be interesting. It's hard to visualize without them handy. I notice that once I cut the 'Y' part of the frames off there is still a slight lip on the edge of the frame.
Is this also ground down? Maybe it won't matter, but it looks like it will cause issues with the everything mating together. _________________ 1967 L633 VW beetle (currently being restored...slowly)

Hello, I found the dimensions at the beginning of the thread to be not exactly correct to match the Vanagon window frame. Instead, I used the actual vanagon window to determine the new dimensions. I recall just setting the vanagon window frame on top of the jalousie window to determine the measurements I needed.
With a new seal, they popped right in like they were made to fit. Good luck with your project. _________________ ☮️ |

Nice work , they all look like they came that way. Im going to be forced to do this mod too if i want an opener behind my stove. Custom cabs have put the stove towards the rear half of the middle side window.
Or, has anyone flopped the slider around so the back half slides forward? I searched but to no avail. |
