Privacy plus ventilation when camping in a tintop! Please share!
Edit - Actually, I mean privacy WITH ventilation. Thanks! _________________ "Sometimes you have to build a box to think outside of." - Bruce (not Springsteen)

I saw somewhere where someone bought some louvered panel from a home improvement store and made a frame so that you could stick it in the sliding window.
you could even put screen on it to keep the bugs out. |

we've put the Jalousie window mod into a tintop for ventillaiton.. (+slider on 80-84s)
and carat or DIY curtains. I had one tintop I bought they just strung up clothesline from each of those round hanger knobs.
dark window tint.
you can install the westy front window curtain snaps or the carat one behind the seats.

You would need to make sure you get the panels that have louvers that look a bit like the ones that the hot rod guys use.
The way they are stamped makes it hard to see in and they stick out enough that they can also keep rain from getting in with the window open.
It can be tricky to find a larger panel with this type of louver but there is nothing that says you can use multiple smaller panels in a frame of your own design.
I plan to use a louvered panel set up as I have described complete with a screen and a fan or two on my own van.
Hell I might even make one for each side so I can have one pusher and one puller to really keep air moving through the van. |

My wife made us some fantastic curtains and I put together a couple of the vents described below:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=388627&highlight=window+vent+screen
It's worked out pretty great. It's still too early in the season for there to be many mosquitoes, so we haven't used the vents this year but they work just fine. |

The solar powered, skylight with fan that I see in a few of the AW tops hitting the scene, look appealing for use in a tiptop too, IMO.
Sunroof upfront, powered fan vent rear....... |

That sounds like a good combo, but you'd be amazed what the pop moonroof does on its own if the fresh air vents are open. I leave it popped when parked on any non-rainy day. it makes an enormous difference in interior temperature and air quality upon entering the van. Because hot air rises any breeze over the top of the van will draw air it out really well (especially with fresh air vents open). I'm sure anyone with westy vent has similar experience, but the pop moonroof is just bigger and easier to open/close.
Here's a little know secret benefit of the upfront sunroof...when it is popped open at highway speeds it decreases wind noise. Whether your windows are cracked or not. At least in mine anyway. Any whistling or noise from poor door seals or partially open windows goes away when the sunroof is popped. It also reduces the wind blast on your face from a partially open window. _________________ '77 Bay Window / '89 Caratsburg (aka. the Stormtrooper) |

I have had a set of those front vents and they did not do much for my needs. But, they were very secure for leaving the vehicle locked. I just needed more airflow than they could provide. Hence going with Jalousies.... YMMV. |
I have them too, work better when you also open the skylight so you create some draft and allow hot air to raise and leave the van. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

RE. solar or 12volt powered vents.
Install an on/off switch on the vent.. many of the solar powered vents lack an off switch.. and you have to disassemble and remove the battery to stop it running... which is no fun at 3am.
It may not seem like much noise during the day.. but come sleepy time, that hum can be just enough to keep one from drifting off.
The mod takes about 30 mins to do on your first attempt.. and the switch can be had for a couple bucks. I use a sealed switch to avoid water intrusion and corrosion. _________________ -89 GL Westy, SVX.. finally.

This
http://www.adventurerv.net/fantastic-roof-vent-mod...q9hmn6jk97
is the vent that several folks have put on their hightop. Variable speeds, in and out, remote and thermostatically controlled and with a rain sensor.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qPLhUMeadCU
Draws little power and very quiet. I've seen them for less than$200 if one shops around.
They're so good that the late Ed Anderson, founder of AdventureWagen, had one in his personal Ford AW van.
Hope that this doesn't push their price up or them into short supply :) _________________ NAHT hightop availability May 18 2023 -

I will be inserting a marine bilge-type tube fan in the D pillar for this reason. I will have a bug screen in it, it will have a variable speed switch, and will pull air through the vehicle and exhaust it up the grille at the top of the D pillar. I was also thinking of putting a simple timer in it that would start exhausting hot air an hour before I am back from a bike ride, etc. Controls will be back next to bed. Won't get to it before mid summer with all the base lining of this van I'm doing, but feel free to develop the idea, use it, or add to it.

do the El Cheapo louvered screens from Lowes/Home Depot etc... takes a few minutes and work great.
FYI the brown color sorta matches the rootbeer colored vans...
