I bought a 1960 bug with a 36 hp motor a couple weeks ago and I've been having an issue with the throttle cable sticking open. I think I've narrowed it down to the spring and metal barrel that the throttle cable goes through right before it attaches to the throttle arm.

Here's a picture. I'm wondering if it's not set up right or could the spring be worn out?

How about the spring seat? Is it installed backwards? http://www.wolfsburgwest.com/cart/DetailsList.cfm?ID=113129909
This is what my setup looks like.

It is installed backwards, but that was my fault. I made it fall off when I was messing with the linkage and I put it on like that. It was still sticking before I did that though. It seems like the metal barrel hits the carb and makes the linkage bind up.

A couple of observations: 1) When you press on the gas pedal, the cable should be a pretty straight pull. Yours looks like it is pulling at quite an angle downwards. From the pic I posted, you can see my cable has a slight upward angle position when at rest. When the pedal is activated it is pulling the cable straight.

2) The distance between the end of the cable and where it fits into the spring seat is 1.5 inches on my 36 hp. Measure your cable and compare. Is it possible that it is not the right cable for your car?
