It is a play on the old VW commercials from the 70's and 80's. Fahrvergnugen! It was supposed to be THE word to describe the joy of driving a VW.
The first time I saw Fukengruven was at a Grateful Dead show, and I think it was a Deadhead that came up with it. I had one on my VW Bus back in the early 90's. I considered it a Dead sticker (my bus was plastered with them!). It had the little dancing guy on it...which was also a play on the dancing bears and skeletons.
it is a great sticker. |
I, too, got the Fukengruven sticker and shirt at a Dead show. I will never forget when my best friends dad, Rolf, a seasoned VW mechanic, walked behind the back of my 74 Thing and questioned me about that sticker. I said, "Rolf, you know the Fahrvegnugen, right? This sticker is FukenGruven, you know, dancing and driving the VW's". He laughed hysterically for over an hour. Needless to say, I bought him a sticker.
The other good one from the Dead shows was the Dunkin' Donuts one that said, Fukin GoNuts in the same font. Always some creative stickers at the Dead shows.
