Bought this 1950 split and obviously previous owners welded the semaphore housings ! Going to do body work and get it back to original ! Would I need to buy semaphore housing (metal part of the post) to weld it in or could u just drill it and restore it? |

seems like it would not be hard to find out?
seems like people sell those pillar pieces, somebody must need them...
At the same time, they might not have done much work to weld them up in the first place _________________ regards

Grind off the paint and check what youŽll find.
With a bit of luck you just have to cut the hole to reopen them and beeing careful and with some cosmetic grinding you might get to a result that would work.
If they are "heavy" weld closed you might go better with a pair of donor openings from an other car. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Rather than grind anything first, try some paint remover, and other softer techniques initially, and as the person above says, see what you find. I've done this a number of times over the years, and they have all had the original boxes underneath, as the work to remove them would be too great. Anyway, what would be the benefit of removing them to the person 'modernising' the car all of those years ago? If you get stuck (which I doubt) I have a pair of the housings.
The waist line on the door and rear 1/4 panel, which are supposed to line up, are miles from one another. What is the cause of this?
Out of interest, is the car in the Lebanon? |

look as though your missing the "door alignment bump stops" and maybe the door is sagging (due too worn hinge pins?) _________________ Currenlty Corralled:

This looks like a type 111, no chrome, etc. Standard model and not Deluxe. Probably makes no difference in the semephores. |

It s a deluxe split, my question is can I remove the welded metal and place the semaphores straight on without buying the cans (housing) for the semaphores?
Here is a link for housings http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1557640 |

If you have an other semaphore car anywhere close to you, take measurements and try to cut carefully exactely where the original hole was.
Maybe the inside is not too messed up and you can save and keep what you have. _________________ Master of my domain! |

I think the holes are there and you do not need housings. Remove more of the paint and mud. I bet you do have the holes there. |
