Just be aware that this dipstick change will put it behind the fan shroud on the type 3 engine. Not a show stopper, but it is kind of a PITA to get your hand in there to check the oil level if you have fat fingers |

The adapter just bolts on in place of the oil fill/dipstick tube (2 nuts hold it on). If you use a long handle dip stick, then you'll be able to reach it easier. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

But unlike the original setup, no matter what, you'll have to open the engine cover to check the oil. If possible, I'd try to figure out a way to rework the stock dipstick/location. |

Agreed. In fact I warned him about having to lift the hatch to check/add oil in a PM.
I also suggested doing an indent for the t-3 oil filler/dipstick set up. I'm just not sure IF he has the room to play with. Like he said himself, he was about 8 inches short of being able to just drop the t-3 floor section into it (lengthwise). That 8 inch difference can be a real bugger to work around without getting creative, or having other options. It was just a suggestion, and he may or may not use it. We'll see. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Understood. Custom vehicles often have their compromises. There was definitely a reason that VW did it the way they did. An indentation and the stock style filler/dipstick would be great IF THERE'S ROOM. I imagine if he'd lived with a TYPE III for a while he would have thought of all of this beforehand but... from what I've seen so far I'm sure he'll make something work. The fact that the stock dipstick is spring loaded should give him some leeway in working out a solution. |

put a oil door in the engine door. No indent req'd. & still serviceable. I agree with Bobnotch that it would be a pain lifting the lid to add or check oil. The type 3 designers tried to keep oil check & fill easier. |

WELL !! survived another drive to new York city....GOODS NEWS !! no traffic tickets this time .
....But I cheated...small show ; took an oversized van. .
..I got a couple of 5x6 foot 1/4 inch thick plastic signs ( dated signs can't be reused )...When I asked the boss if I could " throw them away for him" he laughed and asked me where they were going to go in my volkswagen project ?..
...I think I'll use one for a clean white ceiling...and pieces for door panels that won't warp because they are plastic .
After they are cut to fit and covered with fabric you will never know what company logo was on them
Great info on the Type 3 stuff but it will be a couple of weeks till I can get ba ck to it ...this is our busy seaon for conventions
