What is my exhaust supposed to sound like?

I've been tweaking with the timing and carb adjustments and as I accelerate, the sound has ranged from relatively quiet to a "smooth guttural sound". I think I'm in the right range, especially since it sounded like a harley when I first got it. Maybe I'll post a video while taking a drive.

But can anyone tell me what it's supposed to sound like?

Somewhat related, would it be ok to slap on some rust converter and high-temp paint on the muffler, just to make it look presentable? Much thx!

I wouldn't bother doing the rust converter as it has a chemical reaction which will just get burnt off I suspect when it gets hot. I would give it a good wire brush before using some exhaust paint. But if the noise has changed a lot recently then the baffles inside of the boxes may well have broken up and started collapsing into the box restricting the air flow (this is common with catalytic converters for example). In which case it might not be worth painting them.

Glasspacks are on the loud side for aftermarket mufflers. You'll get a quieter, lower pitched, less annoying sound with dual quiet packs.

It looks like I may have the EMPI Tuck-Away exhaust system. Hmm, so glasspack is on the loud side... makes me think mine is sounding right then.

I like their note about just cleaning and repainting with hi-temp paint. What you guys all said Smile

In any event it falls in the BurbelaBurbelaBurbelaBurbela catagory. And that is a good thing. Very Happy

Thx for that assessment. As I listen to it closer, it does indeed sound like "BurbelaBurbela"!

However, I should add it sounds much different in neutral vs driving on the road. As I rev while in neutral (like in these vids), it sounds pretty smooth, but when on the road there is a more noticeable "gurgling" (which video couldn't quite capture) and I'm gonna guess it's more about the acoustics in the cabin and not the exhaust itself, if that makes sense.

Anyway, unless there is additional wisdom, I'll move on to the next issue... it's helpful that at least I'm not getting "woh, get that checked out" responses.
