Many thanks Chris - yes I have seen that name around here. RIP, sorry for the loss of your friend.

The Life Celebration for Daryl is about a month away...

Some folks are putting together a presentation to be shown at the celebration and to be given to his family. And of course Daryl's samba friends are most welcome to contribute!

If you follow the link below you will find instruction on how to contribute a campfire story, a few photographs, or simply a few kind words.

http://fs30.formsite.com/DarylC/form1/index.html

We need your help to make this happen!

Sad news. Well, he lives on for at least another 100k in the transmission he sent me for Molly!

Farewell to Daryl!
When I moved from the east coast to the west coast, my 83.5 transmission was already getting stuck in 4th gear (dreaded broken syncro). I was able to baby it all the way across the country, coast to coast.

When 3rd gear started sticking, I spoke with Daryl and I asked him whether he would swap out the transaxle the day I brought the Doka up to his workshop. That would of required that he rebuild one and have it waiting for when I got there.

Being the class guy that he was, he refused my offer of pre-paying for the unit, until I got up there. There were options of a TBD and a dropped 4th gear ratio, so it was a substantial commitment on Daryl's part for a guy he never met.

The day I drove up, Daryle was a sport and let me watch his work inquisitively, as he did the switch out in about 2-3 hours, what an expert.

I asked whether I could buy him lunch afterward, and it was a real honor to sit down with him for that hour, for after all the work he did for me, we were able to talk VW's and life in general. I am really happy that I got to share some time with Daryl, short though it was.

I am glad his son Matt is carrying on the business.

I am just one of many people who have an AA trans in my van, so no special story here.

I only spoke to him on the phone, so easy to talk with and uber friendly. Super helpful with the whole process. He answered all my questions patiently and even talked me out of spending more money on an upgraded trans for my stock motor.

Who talks customers out of spending more money?

Apparently a great guy, he seems well loved and I am proud to have a piece of his craftsmanship in my 'Noggin.

Peace to you and your family Mr. Daryl

Just wanted to let people know that I have planted a seed and I need some help nurturing it to grow into something bigger in memory of Daryl. I am not sure what it is yet, but, please add your ideas to the NWMF14 thread in my sigline. A trail ride, obstacle course, a special award....something we can do yearly with to carry on the memory of Daryl.
I know people are prepping for various syncro events around the region, but, please stop and add your ideas to the NWMF thread.

Here is my correspondence with Jim Malloy:

Hey Jim and Emilie,
Just wanted to let you know that I fired up the Samba thread for the 2014 event.

We, the syncro community would like to include some sort of special tribute to Daryl Christensen and will let you know as ideas come up. I am sure that Eric will have some great ideas on what to do in his honor.

We're just a few days away from "Darylstock"!

If you want to camp at the Thurston County Fairgrounds:

"Anyone wishing to camp overnight please call the fairground and reserve a site. Due to the possible large amount of campers the fairground has rescinded it offer to let people stay in the parking lot for free. Please call the Thurston County Fairgrounds @ (360) 786-5453

This will be a potluck, bring whatever pleases you."

Any reports or pics of the event, yet? Despite living within a few miles of ground zero, I had to drive North for the weekend to attend to family matters

I wasn't able to attend as I wished either.
I hope all were able to share great experiences and laugh a little.

Yeah, it was kinda funny to see plates from Washington, Oregon, BC, Utah, Colorado & California - but not the guy who lives next door.

As we were leaving town, the family initiated a "slug-bug" contest to see if we could count all the vans heading South on I-5 and Highway 16. We counted 8 Bays, T3s and EVs, though we had no idea whether they were heading to Darylstock

I got there a little late but there were only two Bays there. One was a very pretty hightop Adventurewagen in Brown and Beige.

There was a guy going around taking pix of each van in attendance, so I didn't bother to take any photos myself...a mistake, obviously. Sad

It was a nice event with up to 35 vans of various years and models plus over 100 people in attendance. Some drove from as far away as San Diego, Utah, or Colorado, one person flew in from Maine and I flew down from Anchorage. It was great to meet up with old friends and make new ones, the weather was good, a little rain over night but the sun was out Saturday. A projector was set up playing a continuous loop of photographs, comments, and stories of Daryl's life and there was an open mic so anyone could share their stories. The potluck had enough food that those who stayed overnight did not have to cook dinner that night. In true Vanagon community fashion absolute strangers became friends instantly. Coming from Alaska with just the weekend for the event plus travel I could not bring a van but one couple whom I did not know prior to Friday evening brought their extra van with bedding, cookware, etc, for me to use. I think the only thing they left out was a mint on the pillow. All in all a good day even though what brought us all together was the loss of one of our own.

The video presentation will be available for all to see very soon. The fellow that produced it did so while in the middle of moving across town and needs a little time to get his house in order and to get his internet connection reestablished so he can upload it.

Thank you for your patience... Smile

Showing my love. These stickers are excellent and I will have one on both of my vans as soon as I get another.
