Has anyone attempted this with the engine installed in the car? I thought I saw a claim that I can be done with the engine in.

Which seal are you talking about?

The foam seal around the engine?
It is possible to put it around. Did it yesterday.

greetings Lutz

Yes, the foam seal, mine is missing completely. It looked like it could be done. Thanks!

I guess I could've looked in the parts book to see if it needed one, but I figured not, since it has a cooling air boot like a Type 3 on a Variant. Lazy Type 3 mofos... Laughing

If it requires the foam seal too, then yes, it should be able to be done with the engine installed like in a Bus. Unless it's completely different, in fact, I don't see how it could be installed WITHOUT the engine in place... unless my T4 ignorance is showing.

Well, mine is a bit as for Beetles, you drop the engine, and Beetles are what I know best. This one is totally gone so I've ordered one and I know that the bus one fits. Most Type 4's I have either seen or collected for parts are missing the bellows (variants) but the foam seal is in place, well mostly.

I installed the foam seal last week on mine with the engine in. You just need to be patient and work it through the opening. If you have any old seal left keep it as the new seal has a 1-3" gap. i used a piece of old seal from my vanagon for that. I am not sure if the seal is as critical as it is for the vanagon or bus since it does have the boot isolating the air. I wonder if it runs hotter because there is not any air circulating in the compartment.

Well the seal arrived so if it stops raining any time soon, this will be part of my weekend projects. Do you have a pic of what you mean by the new seal having a 1-3" gap? Do you mean that it won't meet end to end when installed? Unfortunately, my seal is totally gone but I may be able to scare up a piece from a parts car.

If you can't find anything I have an extra piece of seal from my vanagon. That is what I used to fill the gap.
