not sure what section this should be in so the mods can move if need to
http://news.yahoo.com/happens-shipping-containers-lost-sea-122500812.html
I was reading this article and even though it's about the pollution issue it made me wonder how safe or how many times one of those lost containers had a old vw or some other vintage car in it
I know a lot of cars get shipped every year but personally I have always been put off alittle from getting a car from somewhere that has to be shipped like this
am I alone in this or is this a concern of others also? _________________ '60 15 window walkthrough

I think lost containers are sort of like airline crashes. It doesn't happen as often as you think. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

X2. That's a very impressive company.
I would be more worried about what happens at the dock or moving through Customs than I would be about what happens on the ship.
The biggest ships now carry 18,000 containers, and there's one building in South Korea that'll carry 19,000. One article I read said that's enough containers to haul 110,000,000 pairs of Nike shoes in one voyage. You can't even wrap your brain around how big those things are. |

What's the difference between loosing your car in a container the falls to the bottom of the ocean or loosing it in a tornado, earthquake, fire, or some ass stealing it? _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

They lose a Container with your car in it.
Someone fishes it out and owns your car. _________________ Happyasshell

This survived a typhoon that hit the Philippines. It floated in and landed on the top of all the debris. Maybe if it wasn't a bug that can float it might have ended up on the bottom of the pile.

I was freaking out when I shipped my ghia from New Zealand to Australia especially as it was going to be on a roll on roll off car ship at first which upon reading seem to be higher risk for damage at sea. (ie. http://www.caranddriver.com/features/cougar-ace-the-great-103-million-snafu-at-sea)
In the end it was decided to put my ghia on a container as if it went roll on roll off it would have to deter to Japan to pick up lots of new cars on route to Australia. The container process went really smoothly, the ship made record time to Australia and the ghia had no damage at all!
If you look on google images there's plenty of photos of peoples classic cars that have been damaged through the shipping process. |

Sort of on this topic - they get smashed at the docks sometimes when they are moving them around and loading/unloading them. So not lost but the contents may be destroyed. _________________ How to Post Photos

Interesting article on how many containers are actually lost:
http://gcaptain.com/how-many-shipping-containers-lost-at-sea/
Quote: |
Based on 2014′s survey results, the WSV estimates that there were approximately 733 containers lost at sea on average for the years 2011, 2012 and 2013, not including catastrophic events. Including catastrophic losses, for these years the average annual loss was approximately 2,683 containers, an uptick of 297% from the previous three years . . . .
Now, all this may seem like a lot, but it’s a far cry from the 10,000 figure that is widely circulated, a figure that the WSC called in its report “unsupported and grossly inaccurate”. Also, when you consider that in 2013 the international liner shipping industry carried approximately 120 million containers packed with an estimated $4 trillion worth of cargo, the numbers don’t seem so bad.

Sold my Westy to a guy in UK, had it sent to Newark and put in a container, the whole deal went very smoothly with no damage. |

If memory serves- didn't this happen a few years ago with a container ship from Sweden- chock full-o-Volvos? Somewhere there's an artificial reef of x-90s. The world may not have noticed. _________________

The Island of Lanai in Hawaii has a beach littered with them apparently. Im sure most are lost in Hawaii, and other inter-island hauls. Barges loaded with those things with a bit more than gravity holding them down.
