I got a new electric fuel sending unit for a '66 bug and a new fuel gauge like this one:

For some reason, I can't get the gauge to show the appropriate gas level. Does anyone know if there is a compatibility issue with this gauge and a '66 vw sending unit?
Can anyone explain how it needs to be wired? Maybe I wired it wrong? The gauge has three terminals (G, I, and S). I connected a ground to G, power from the ignition to I, and a wire from the sending unit to S. That didn't work, so I tried grounding the sending unit as well and that affected fuel level reported on the gauge but it was still way off from a full tank which is what it should be since I just filled up the tank. |

First off: - BE CAREFUL with that full tank of gas and your electrical adventures.
You can bench test the entire fuel gauge and sender set up. I always bench test all fuel items before installing them.
If it was wired as per instructions the first time, it may be incompatibility issues only and not wiring. |

You will need to check the resistance of the sender against the gauge. If the resistance is different the gauge will read off. You can add resistance, but you cannot remove (high school electrical class). Try to buy gauges & senders as a match set. good luck |

By connecting a resistor in parallel with the sender, you can reduce the resistance.

But it best to buy the matched set, as posted. |
