The cooling topic has been discussed at length on the entire site. None of the parts you seek are Thing specific as far as I know. Here is one of many threads that has some pics that may be helpful. Also, most any of the parts you need can be found in the classified section.

Hay thanks for the info, my head is on over load, not sure what im doing , reading this post, looking at that post , got me a little informed but mostly confused, so like you said gi joe keep moving on.. shroud is going back on in open position , I think all the tin still needs to be there just no t-stat. Don't have any heater boxes anyway. I got the tri-mill bumper exit exhaust with the j pipes to go on. I'm ordering new tin, but I cant find the rear cyl tin deflectors x2 I think its #8 and cant find #32 pre heat tube tin (from pic on page 2),, not sure what i need at this point, dam air cooled |

I think that's somewhat true, but rather than give people the same old "go search" routine, I provide the service for free!
The search function is often wacky to use and if you don't know the specific name of what you seek, it's even more frustrating.
Don't stop the posts now, others will search here in the future! _________________ Michael

No problem Brother! Lots to take in if you've never fooled with air cooled stuff. Lots and Lots of opinions on the Samba and they're usually worth what they cost. This is the best section for getting legit help that I've seen however. _________________ Michael

Thanks for the link, so it looks like I need 3 nuts; 2 - 85mm studs for the bottom? and the bolt for the driver side. Yea. |

Yes, just make sure your engine case is threaded as discussed here: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=601666
otherwise you will need a 4th nut. |

How do I know when it's time to replace the master cylinder. OK so I'm trying to bleed the breaks, I've got a new front disk break conversion new metal lines front and back, new drums shoes and wheel cyl. But original master. I adjusted rear for slight drag, and started bleeding the back rt. first. Got a little air and fluid from the rear , but can't get much and no breaks pedal soft and going all the way to the floor,, do I just keep bleeding or am I missing something.. Or do you think I need a new master? This thing is making me *$&!&$@ .. |

Can't recall your situation... Was this a driver when ya got it? Did the brakes Ever work in your presence??
Either you haven't bled enough, Have a leak at some connection(you made quite a few connections with all those parts), or your master is bad...
Make sure the reservoir is full, and you're not re-introducing air... It takes a while to bleed brakes properly...
I had a similar issue when I did my front disc conversion. Turns out I had a leak, very slight leak at one of the from lines.. Too small to really notice for a bit, until the fluid started to puddle up... It was big enough to suck air back in though! _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

Hey GI Joe, thanks for the reply, and the input, ck out my quick sketch below this is what I'm going for , and I think what you suggest, I want it as strong and safe as a thing can be..
So take a look and let me know what your thinking...
I hope this is the right way to do the pics, and you can make sense of them. |
Whoa! Just saw this post... Sorry I haven't answer sooner... I was traveling most of June/July and had to rely on my phone for a lot of forum reading... That doesn't last long with me anymore...
Anyway,
In regards to your pics... You've got the idea, somewhat with your "red" areas... My thoughts would be to run them all the way to the outer edge of the pan/body and then all the way to the center tunnel(significant structural areas).. Then bolt and plate as you have in your sketch... The original mounts are spread along a 16-18"(?) length for each side of each side, with very light(relatively speaking) seats. That disperses any collision force out a bit.
You're proposing mounting a Much heavier seat, in much smaller areas(two bolts per end of each side)... Your force will all be focused at that one area.
Copy that? _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

This thing was a non runner when I got it, so as I say it's a work in progress .
But I did get the breaks bleed, with a power bleeder, it worked great.
As far as the seats go, its back to the drawing board, my mount's didn't work, so I'm trying to come up with something else or maybe different seats , that will mount better, but i really like these built in seat belts. |
