As with any VW engine you need to look at all the pieces - what cc do the heads measure out to? (you never know if the heads have been flycut at some point)

Often times you do get a bump in CR from big bore kits - is running with midgrade or premium fuel something you want or do? or do you want to set it up for cheap bottom grade fuel?

I would shoot for .040"(1mm)(piston to head clearance) and do whatever chamber work needed for the cr you need/want.

FYI - I set mine up for 8.1 with the square boss heads and AA big bore kit. As it turned out, I didnt need to use any shims. I run mid grade to play it safe and the car runs amazingly well.
