I'm trying to ID what braking system (57 down) or (58-64) is w/ this transaxle.
The number on the trans (as you can see below) is A1302935 which appears to put it at the end of the '57 model year. According to the samba technical info, the first '58 beetle would have had chassis # 167038 and the trans would have been A1324871. That's later than my trans number, but I don't know if they matched chassis # and trans #'s for production date accuracy.
According to the Wolfsburg site, up to chassis # 1673410 use through '57 brakes. The start of the 58-64 brakes begins with Chassis # 1673411. This suggests they used early 57 brakes on the early 58 beetles???? Does that make sense????
So what do these look like to you? Before I order replacement stuff, I better ask.
Here's the trans number, although I realize even if its a 57 someone could have changed the backing plates and drums.
I've searched around and found a few informative threads. But they don't tell me what I have.

I know the e-brake sizes are different:
1958-64 measures 1752mm in length
1956-67 measures 1789mm in length

I just put some 63 brakes on my split case. Perfect fit with 63 e-brake cables. I used the 56 bearing cover.
The front brakes fit easy as well and the shoes are larger too. Nice improvement.

I got sidetracked with other projcts but I need to get this done. This is a '57 beetle. I swapped out the later leaking trans for a known good '57 original. Replaced the shocks while I was in there. I'm using the '58-'64 brakes but I have a couple questions.
There are two diagrams floating around on this site one showing that you use the gasket and one showing no gasket. SInce I'm using the '58-'64 brakes with the '57 tranny should I use the gaskets?
Here's the seal kit I have.
I'm not sure how clean the face of these contact points are supposed to be, but do these look clean enough? Do I use Indian Head or Aviation Permatex?
Appreciate any comments or advice. |

That looks like the pre-'58 backing plate!
