Plastic shims and split case boxes

Hi, just doing a box swap on my 54 beetle. I had a really nice split box that I'm now putting in but have noticed only one box ( my old one) had the white axle tube shims. The other none. I checked numbers and both boxes show made in 1953. Do some have no shims?

Thanks. So what your saying is no shims were used on split boxes. It's just metal on metal?
It's the white plastic flower shaped shim between where the axle tube makes contact with the gearbox. Like a domed shape.
