Yes my poor Thing burnt. I had been cruising around all day hitting a few parties at friend's houses. Even won best float in my neighborhood parade that morning!

Anyways, we had the fireworks (all new and still in the box) in the back seat. We took my girlfriend's car to dinner and came back to police and fire in my driveway. Seems some jackleg thought it would be funny to blow some fireworks off while I was gone. Well I live in a cove be the idiot decided to set them off where you see the tubes. I guess the sparks set the rest on fire and the rest is history. We took the hard top off that's why you only see the windows. Makes me sick every time I look at it. 14 years of working on it down the drain....

If anyone is interested, motor and trans ran great. Fenders, heater and anything from the windshield forward are still good. New tires, shocks, brakes.... makes me sick listing all the new parts...

Arson investigator is on the case. Doubt they find the F-stick but there were witnesses that saw a car zipping out of my cove. No plate number but they did get a description of the guy and car. I pray the VW Gods will shine down on me and help find the idiot.

Thanks for posting. Really sad to have this happen, especially to a car you have owned, rebuilt, and maintained for so long.

So sorry for your troubles man, but I'm glad you put an end to the speculation. Good luck with the hunt for the perpetrator. Sounds like you have some interested parties for the Thing.

If it makes you feel any better, your car is still a better base for fixing back up than mine...

Why not fix the car? Wire harness, seats, dash pads and a whole lot of cleaning and painting and it should be driving again. Crying or Very sad

That really sucks. What is wrong with some people? Evil or Very Mad

It has spurred me to go and buy a fire extinguisher to install in mine (even though it probably wouldn't have helped in this case).

hey Memphis;
my Heart goes out to you brother, that is a sad thing to happen to a THING.
Much less due to some (expletive) Jerk, who you probably know.
why else would they be up in your THING litin' fireworks?

Anyways, I had an idea, due to the current damage, what could you do with it?
Sure you could sell it, you could restore it, but what about a Theme look, could you use the burn type look to create a WW2 / Battle Damage look maybe?

I know it's probably a dumb idea but you could at least still have your THING and maybe have some fun with the story and it's outcome.

It would DEFINATLY have character and a Story to back it up.

Just trying to help you figure out a 'cheap" way to keep it.

I hope Insurance was on it!
Good luck with it what ever you do.

Tom.

Agreed!(if you're taking of your town, St. Louis...?)
I had a limp mode issue on my Subie this spring while I was there for work... Happened on the interstate in Far East St Louis... Limped it down to an oriellys for a code read..... Rough crowd there....
Thank the founding fathers for CCW! Wink

I can sympathize to some degree. The Thing I bought was vandalized to the point of junk (engine sledged) and that's how I bought it from the lady who was the PO. Still looking at what to do to fix it. Needs everything.

Sorry I haven't responded to everyone. Work had me out of town.

Buddy of mine who owns a body shop talked me into letting him assess the damage. I might just get the old bird back on the road if it's not too gone.

I think that's a wise route to take! She doesn't look too bad at all....

If you need to unload it though, keep me in mind! Wink
