I swear I hear you laughing all the way from Oregon.
I will test the TSII that came with it as well, maybe even swap it in just for shits n' giggles. |
It's OK- I'm laughing with you! _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Anyone know the best (read easiest) way to get at the thermo time switch. I replaced the TSII, and the coil as both tested bad, and while it fired up again, it ran and then started missing and running badly, and quit.
FWIW, I scanned and sent Everett the 1974 L-Jet type 4 troubleshooting manual which he posted in the technical section. Wonderful info and it wasn't here before. I have a paper copy of it, and on a CD that another Samba member sent me. The CD mostly had Type 2 info on it, but after searching through it, I found that a copy of the troubleshooting manual had also been placed on it. _________________ 1970 Campmobile Click to view image

A 412 right?..... if the thermotime switch is in the normal spot.....I use a 1/4" ratchet, short 13mm socket and a universal joint to remove the nut.
really the easiest way is to remove the distributor.
The thermotime switch should have no effect on running unless uts leaving the cold start valve on. You can check by just unplugging the plug to the valve. Ray |

Would a bad one cause stalling? The troubleshooting guide pointed to checking it. _________________ 1970 Campmobile Click to view image

If you are running and warmed up....and running normally.....that "should" imply that the cold start valve is not injecting....which would mean the thermotime switch is not grounding the connection and everything is normal.
However if its not warmed up...say...stone cold.....the TT switch NOT making ground could cause difficult starting.
Or.....if its NOT cold enough to require the extra fuel from the cold start injector....and the engine fires up normally .....but the TT switch is bad and fires the CS injector....yes....in that, case it can stall. Ray |

When I first got the car, the weather was COLD, and it ran well for quite a while. It only started stalling after the weather warmed up (spring and summer), to the point where the time it would stay running, decreased with the higher outside temps. Once they started to fall again, it would stay running longer. When it was the height of summer, it got to the point of not even firing up at all. _________________ 1970 Campmobile Click to view image

Sounds rich. Its common with these to be a hair rich in baseline fuel mixture if you dont tweak the MPS...and in the in-between temps like early spring and late fall....like say...high 40's to 50's.....the intake air temp sensor which was not really the greatest most incremental part.....can cause odd running.
I will have to check my book....but when the car is actually fairly tightly tuned...and it probably was if it came from the Tramster.....the engine liked the intake air temp sensor unplugged seasonally.
Give that a try. Ray |

But seriously... I'm looking back on all this and remembering that we have really no idea how old the gas was in that thing when you were having the issue. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
