I have lots of Beetles but I still miss the Square I owned 20 years ago.

A Square is smooth, quiet, nice and comfy, good on fuel, lots of space for carrying bikes and camping gear.

But - not being as common or as popular as a Beetle, they can be a little difficult to get some parts for (new and second-hand) and the parts are more expensive

I hope this gets you thinking!

No brainer: Squareback.

Parts are not tough unless you have an early model. Rust and hacked FI are the trouble spots but you can spot that before you buy.

Beetle. Squarebacks are great and I'd love to have another one, but they are more expensive, more complex, harder to work on, and harder to find parts for.

start with a Beetle. Once you get more experience, then consider a type 3.

Unless you're going to pay someone to work on it, then just get whatever car makes you feel good when you drive it.

If you want practical get a minivan. The beetle is fun because of how other people react to it.

First car? I wouldn't pick either unless you already know how to work on cars, but if you must, I'd say the Beetle just because there's more of them around and more parts for them.

But I have always had a soft spot for Squarebacks. They look nice, they are efficient in their use of space, they are small...

Tough choice.

Beetle is a good start. It's the "gateway" VW.

You obviously don't have the "passion" for a particular style or car type, so what's the point?? why not a Honda civic? (ugh!)>>>Dan

What is your budget?

Once you figure that out see what comes to you, start looking and don't get inpatient. Basically see what you can find in your price range and in the best condition. If its your first get something that's running. It is easier to learn basic skills on a running driving complete car instead of an incomplete non-runner, rusty hulk.

If you find a beetle that you like first go for it and likewise for a squareback. But if you're like most of us on here you will wind up with more than one VW so get one of each.

If you have a roof rack on a squareback you can haul just about anything/everything. Very Happy

I am old enough to remember the Vw craze of the 60's,and it was the type 1 that was the design in demand. The weird science teacher down the street drove a type 2,as well as the church bingo club and the TV repairman,Type 3 squarebacks came along later and were also driven by the weird science teacher and that strange woman who lived alone and wore mens clothes..
But it was the beetle that started it all...now lately busses have come into vogue (don't know why, they drive like shit),and the prices reflect it.. squarebacks are still owned by tree huggers and lesbians..but the type 1 beetle is still the leader, the ubervolkswagen...
