Thanks for the replys. Yes I agree with what you are saying about putting lateral stress on the center of the tie rod. It is a weak point if I do some extracurricular high speed curb feeling or hit a pot hole. I did however make the tie rod out of 1" .095 tubing so it should be a little more stout than a typical VW tie rod. As funds allow I would like to get the proper center load r&p. Sway bars are definitely on my short list to help with body roll. And yes scold away about no front brakes on a street rail which brings me to my latest project over this past weekend.
I've never been happy with my throttle setup. I had to bend my foot pretty far forward/uncomfortable to actually get full throttle on the GM throttle body. I also know that I need front brakes and my current single master cylinder would not push enough fluid to add front calipers.
I could've probably found a larger bore cylinder and swapped out my current one. But I also like the idea of having a separately sealed front/rear brake setup since I don't have cable ebrakes. I'm also pretty cheap and like to utilize what I already have whenever possible. So I decided to convert my current brake/clutch pedal into a dual reservoir brake only pedal and buy a separate clutch master cylinder/pedal. I swapped the arms left and right with each other so they bent more inwards. Straightened them some in the vise. Once I got them overlapped I scribed a line and cut them so they would be flush with each other. Then welded them together and cut off the excess so new pedal pad would fit snugly. I should've taken a better pic before I put the wider brake pedal cover on.
I also stole Craig's throttle idea. Turned out great and because the pivot arms are different lengths it changed the pedal throw ratio. A couple pieces of 1/4 inch plate from lowes to mount new clutch pedal and throttle and several hours later I'm pleased. I will order front brake rotors and calipers and remount what used the be the clutch master cylinder in the vacant hole to feed the front brakes hopefully within the next week. I should also be able to adjust the plungers on the cylinders to dial in the brake bias and not have to get a proportioning valve for the front.

Don't forget to plumb in a brake bias valve to balance front to rear braking.
looks great, front brakes are on my short list also. |

Be sure to feel that pedal arrangement out. I personally like my accelerator farther toward the front of the car. Dont have to bend a leg to use it and less chance of getting gas and brake at the same time. Just my opinion of course. |

What size rim/tires are you running up front? The look WIDE! I wonder if they are putting any extra stress on the front end components, looks like you have quite a bit of offset on those rims.

Nice! I made a bike rack for my buggy too... then drove in the garage with the bike still on FAIL! oh well no real damage. Having a windshield is a BIG change you will love it. |

Looking great like the bike rack too. Unfortunately, I did for get early one morning going to a tri and broke an aero bars as I went into a parking garage. Like the build. |

Few more updates.
Added a damper to my steering. Good cheap stability. Feels a little less twitchy.
And for some reason, if you have a rear mounted radiator and you put a windshield in front if it, it tends to not be very efficient. haha. So I relocated it a little further back and a little higher and cut a hole in my roof for more airflow. I tried to stand the radiator as upright as I could without it looking too awkward. Form over function right? Or do I have that engineering concept backwards? lol I think I'm still going to have to add some scooping to get proper airflow. The fan kicks on at 221 degrees and brings the temp down quickly, but running down the road at 60 mph, the fan shouldn't have to run at all.
My next project is to mount an old patina VW hood. Going to have to do some serious trimming to get it where I want it. My original thought was to strip the complete hood, paint the outer borders in the same red to match my rail, and leave the center areas to rust or patina as the cool people call it. But after getting this hood for free, I decided I don't want to mess with mother natures "art" so this winter I'm considering tearing rail completely down and going all white to match the white in the hood. Difficult to keep clean, but I'm a street only guy now.
And lastly, I really like confusing people. So this is happening now. I just need to clean up the valve cover a little more before I glue on the new emblem where the Saturn badge used to be.

That thing is awesome. I have wanted to build something like that for a while now. |
Thanks
This is my inspiration for adding the VW hood to a rail. I don't honestly think I've ever had an original idea in my entire life.

I have looked at that picture an awful lot and want to do something similar. _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

You could always chop the front of the hood back a few inches so it becomes flush with your skid plate in the front.
Sorta like this...but not quite. You get the idea.

Yes exactly. I want to keep my skid plate. I'm going to trim as much off the back edge so it is straight and fits up next to my windshield but still retains the emblem. Then keep as much of the front as possible and probably relocate the chrome handle up a little higher. How else would I be able open my hood to fill my washer fluid if I delete the handle?
And I was out cruising around last night trying to gain some more street cred and the inner douche/ ex ricer came out in me when I was passing by the hospital. So here are some parking garage glamour shots. haha

You did a great job bro, your ride turned out badass.
I've done a lot of lowered bugs from back in the 70's until recently and ground down some beams on the road. Anybody that hates on your ride is a fucking retard.
The thing looks bullet proof.
Anybody on this forum that says they wouldn't like to sport that into town or take it around some corners is a big friggin triangle _________________ Herc |

How did you mount that windshield?
The PO of mine just screwed the polycarbonate straight to the tube frame and I do not like it.

I tack welded a 1/2" lip around the frame and the glass shop cut safety glass and just urethaned it in place. I didn't worry about trying to do a curved lip in the upper corners since being water tight was of no concern.
