What's the difference (associated years, applications) between the black cap and brown one?
Also, the black cap and the brown cap on the left each have a notch on the bottom lip (to the left of the half circle for the condenser). But the brown cap on the right doesn't. What's it for?

The cap pictured in the center is a replacement for Pre '48 VWs. The raised finger for the coil wire is the giveaway. _________________ 1947 Typ 11a

Never seen 2 different height ones. I have a whole box of them, I'll have to check, but I think they are all the same height.... _________________ John Henry

Pre-48 only? Are the distributor wires different (low resistence) Pre-48? Did they change in 49 to a higher restance? The "raised finger" is a resistor ~ 10.2 kOHMS. So wouldn't that also be used for ignition noise suppression for cars that had radios? |

The angle that the picture was taken is deceiving. Both Bosch brown caps are the same height. The black one is taller due to the "raised finger'. |

Hello once again.
Can anyone help me identify this Cap distributor, it was in box in the shelf including a dismantled 383 distributor 5G.
I never saw it i and I cant find anything like this in the forum, so I ask kindly if anyone saw this one.
there is only the top flat cap, is missing the "body" cap .
Regards

I can't make out the badge numbers but 5G would be a May 1951 distributor. The cap on the left does not appear as typical for VW while the one on the right does.
Not sure why some caps have that little notch and others do not.
Only other tid bit I can ad is that it was not unusual for the caps to have mismatched colors. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Hi thanks for the reply, both distributers are VW VE 4 BRS 383, one is 5G the one with that "different" flat cap, the other is 10F oct 50, and is with correct cap for split.
The other maybe is replacement later part, just was curious about it

yes maybe is that, I was just curious was mixed with this 2 distributers, the most strange I need a 52 distributer and I have 2 which are early
Maybe the one 52 got broken and the guy in the past got 1 complete and the other to use has spare parts if needed, never know, whatever I will use it.
Regards and thats for the help

I frequently see these 383 distributors with the short Garbe Lahmeyer "VW" caps. They do fit but are incorrect application. _________________ Roads Scholar &

I'm trying to determine the age and app. of the cap on the left. It is shown with a normal 383 side exit cap. It does fit the 383 distributor perfectly however the inside is about 10mm deeper than the normal cap, the top section is about 10mm larger in diameter with 3 hold down screws and fits OVER the lower body instead of on top of the lower body. Also the wire exit hood is turned a bit more clockwise looking from the top down. There is a Bosch number inside ZZVS73Z11

Actually that taller flat cap will work on the VJ 4 BR 8, 019, VJ 4 BR 25, 010's. They were stock for Goliath and possibly others. I have a Goliath VJ 4 BR 16 that uses the tall cap as stock

Yes,
The hooded exit for the plug wires is a bit cockeyed but it does fit/work fine. _________________ Roads Scholar &
