|
|
Hi all,
My early '76 has developed a vibration in the rear end.
It is present throughout the range, but seems loudest between 35-45 MPH.
From the drivers seat, I cant really tell if it is more right or left, just that it is in the rear.
It stops briefly when I jerk the wheel to the right.
Any thoughts as to what it might be?
Thanks _________________ 1976 Westy Marigold Yellow

Does the fact that the sound stops when cutting the wheel to the right indicate which CV or side is having the issue?

It might but best to raise the rear, do a visual inspection for loose bolts and torn boots. From there spin each wheel while watching and listening to the cv's. The problem should become evident.

OK, Getting back on this, and could use some troubleshooting help.
Here is the rundown of progress/diagnosis.
Last summer had this creaking noise in the rear end:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=572912&highlight=
Turned out to be the outer bearing on the passengers side.
Installed new CV joints on passenger side only while diagnosing the above problem. No change.
Changed passenger side wheel bearings. Above problem solved.
This summer developed the vibration that initiated this post.
Removed new CV joint from passenger side, replaced with former CV Joint. no change in sound of vibration
Swapped axles/ CV joints from passenger to drivers side. No Change in sound of vibration
Axle swap:
A--------B C----------D
C--------D A-----------B
80 mile road trip- Vibration is considerably louder now
Replaced Drivers side wheel bearings, No change in vibration/
sound.
Sound still cuts out entirely when the wheel is jerked to the right or going at speed around a hard right turn, as it was before the axle swap.
There seems to be no excessive play (side to side, or along the length)with the axles installed
So.... can I rule out CV joints altogether at this point?
Could it be a transmission problem?
Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks for reading through this. _________________ 1976 Westy Marigold Yellow

Try swapping the tires front to back. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

And the verdict is that the outer bearing, passenger side that I replaced last summer failed with less than 2,000 Miles on it.
Actually, it probably started getting noisy after 1200 miles.
I hate re-doing things.
On the upside, I am getting pretty quick at taking the rear axles apart. _________________ 1976 Westy Marigold Yellow

Bearings were PEX from Bus Depot.
However, this was my first bearing job, and I am not ruling out human error.
I thought they went in well, but am a little ticked that I pulled the drivers side bearings as well, while trying to diagnose this issue.
I guess a I will know in a few hundred miles how I made out.
Interestingly enough, the original inner bearings were stamped Hungary. So.... I guess maybe they were not the original bearings.
I bought the bus with 43,00 miles, so I guess they could have been swapped out. _________________ 1976 Westy Marigold Yellow

I had trouble with the PEX bearings too. Got rid of them and replaced them with FAG bearings. The PEX were binding upon installation. They were installed properly. There was no way I was going down the road with them. Was told there hadn't been any complaints...it would seem otherwise. Just as a side, there is nothing with the Timkens that are available at your FLAPS either. |

One of our Subaru Outback wheel bearings just went out at 51000 just out of warranty, I guess they aren't very good these days. I The early VW' wheel bearings rarely go out. I bet I have over 180,000 on my buses, and they are still fine! _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Dan,
I'll bet the Subaru wheel bearings aren't made by those pesky Germans. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum
