Hi friends!

Just wanted to ask what tools/extra parts y'all deem essential to carry around with you in your KG wherever you travel...I understand this may/will change depending on year/modifications, but kind of just wanted to know everyone's preferences!

Cheers!

Well - my KG isn't quite running, but… in my chevy:

- Digital Multimeter
- Mechanic's stethoscope
- Digital air pressure gauge
- Timing light (so I can check how spark is doing)
- Oil + can of gas
- Power Steering fuel and coolant Rolling Eyes
- Fire extinguisher under passenger seat
- I never bother with first aid kit Rolling Eyes
- additional fuses

Parts
VC Gaskets
Oil change gasket kit
Rotor & Cap
Spark Plugs
Fuel Filter
One of each bulb
Fuses

Tools as needed for:
Carb Adjustment and R&R
Engine R&R
Brake Adjustment
Tire Pressure Gauge & 12 Compressor ($9.95 mini)
12v Test Light

Fluids
2 Liters Oil
Dot 4 Brake Fluid

It all fits into the back of the spare. Having the air compressor for topping up the spare to make the washers work makes sense to me ... free air at gas stations is harder and harder to find.

Standard full tool kit with wrenches, sockets and screwdrivers. I should add to that, but I don't stray far from home.

I carry a full tool kit that covers every nut, bolt and screw on my car. That includes a 8mm triple square, 17mm allen and a 36mm socket with breaker bar. Plus a spare type 2 cv joint greased with new bolts ready to go on. Exam gloves and rags. Ask me why...

If I ever make it out to a drag strip I'll bring a spare axle as well.

And then theres my "Go bag"...but that's for another forum.

Really Muir's book has a great tool list. I carry the 2nd category, the expanded kit.
Then I usually have my work tool bag in the car also, as I am usually going to someone's house at least once a week to help with cars and stuff.

On the parts side, it is pretty simple.
Purchase an extra distributor and a hold down clamp.
When you are doing your next major tune up, put it in and time it. Lock the clamp down, then remove the dizzy at the hold down clamp, so that it is timed. Put it in a Ziploc bag, cap, rotor, plug wires and all. Once or twice, I needed to replace points, but I was off and driving in less than 5 minutes by yanking the whole thing.

Carbs is usually pretty rock solid, if I was doing a 3000 mile drive, I might grab a rebuild kit for it.

Fuses, absolutely, as they are getting harder to find, but bulbs are still easy to find damn near anywhere.

Lug bolts, carry 4

Premium Auto Club card.

Cell Phone.

Bottled water.

Sketch pad and pen to work up an evocative study of the beautiful car's lines, whilst waiting for the tow truck to arrive.

Thanks everyone for your replies. It's giving me great ideas. I only just got my KG back (had to bring it up to Washington state from California) and haven't been able to do much to restore/ work on it for the last 4ish years. Feels really good to have her running again, but I've lost some memory of the tips and tools that are good to have around!!

Beautiful color!

You may want to add some spare fog light lenses to your spares list too. Wink

Thanks!

Ha, yeah, the guy I bought the car from freaking welded those lights on, never connected them and didn't have lenses for them! Luckily, I have plans to fix all of that, but they're on the "Reid, you really need to focus on getting the important stuff working/finished before you get to that!" list...
