|
|
After a six year hiatus while she waited in storage one thing about my Ghia is unmistakable and intoxicating: the smell!
Sure, it's mostly that old car fuel vapor and really old oil that's been cooking for decades somewhere in the deep recesses of the push rod tubes. But is there something else there that makes it special to you? I think for me it's just nostalgia and anything beyond fuel vapors and oil is just my imagination powered by fond memories.
I'm sure it's different for everyone but how would you describe "that Ghia smell"? _________________ '72 Ghia Coupe

Air Cooled is a smell of its own. I was brought home from the hospital in a new 58 bug, and the smell has been etched in my DNA ever since |

It's a unique combination of gas, oil, horsehair and tar board that's true of old air-cooled vws. My first Bug, a 63 and all subsequent ones had that rare familiar smell. It never fails when someone very familiar with VDubs first gets in either my '69 Bug or Ghia they eventually say "It even smells like a Volkswagen!" then they start relating their own VDub story which quite often is about happier times in their lives. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"

It used to smell like mouse poop, mold and rust. I believe I've gotten rid of that. Thought the box of old carpet I still have can bring back that nostalgia. |

Before I bought mine, I told the guy if I jumped it and dumped a bit of gas down the carb and it fired, I would buy it (sat for 10 years). I did just that and the 1st puff of exhaust that came out brought back all the hurried memories of my bugs, and busses. My son looked at me and asked what that weird smell was, I said that's a old volkswagon kid. You'll get used to it.
My wife calls her stinky car, I told her she stinks and the car smells fine.. Lol |
