Yes, I've been searching but not getting anywhere.

If you look at my buggy you may notice the wheels are UGLY... and the tires are a bit small for me.

I'm thinking of going to 15x8 slotted Indy style wheels, but not sure what size tires.
I want to raise the height slightly and also go wider.

Any suggestions?

If you go on a site like www.tirerack.com it will give you the specifications of not only the tires you have on there now.

So take a look at the dimensions of your current 205/60 15 and if you want to go smaller you can have a reference point for the new tires based on the sizes of the current ones. They will also tell you the appropriate rim widths.

Greatly appreciated, thanks.

I also found this on an older thread, on a blue buggy..they look sweet.

Front: 15x7 215/65/15
Rear: 15x8 275/60/15

gives me a starting point tho. Very Happy

The 15 X 7 on the front will effect your steering by both making it want to "hunt" the high spots going down the road and a little stiffer to turn when standing still. A 215 on a 15 X 6 looks really good on the front of a buggy.

Also, Cobra by Cooper Tire sells a 295 60 15 that looks nice on a 15 X 8 on the rear.

Here are 295 on 8 inch in the rear and 195 on 5 inch in the front on a buggy I had a few years ago.

Joe, any chance those are actually 295/50/15's on the rear?

50's will work on an 8" wide wheel? No crowning?

The tires on the buggy I posted above had 8.5 inch wheels with those 295's on it and no crowning, or ballooning.

What did you mean by "hunt the high spots"?

pull to the side type thing?

my front end is so light it drifts more than I had thought it would, but I've gotten used to it now.

having that dinky small steering wheel doesn't help much, either hah.

I'm learning tho...haven't had it but a couple months, and I'm only familiar with beetles, baja's, squarebacks, and buses... dune buggy is something new to me. the shortened chassis is interesting to say the least.

hoping to find a front and rear bumper along with a roll cage soon.
had a guy tell me it's just like a 4wheel motorcycle...you wreck, you're dead Sad

Ha Ha! They are a "safer" motorcycle.

If the road you are driving on is old, the area where the car tires run will be slightly lower than the very center and the L & R edges. A wider tire on a VW will tend to want to find and "hunt" those higher ridges and give a feel of being squirrelly. The higher areas will pull the car to them.

that's on the freeways around here some, but I don't put it on the interstates... I'm not comfortable driving at 70+mph hah.

most of the roads around here have potholes... so I guess I'm ok with the wider fronts... the car is so small I can almost take just a half lane most of the time Very Happy

IF car hunts or wanders, you may need caster shims if you don't have any under lower beams right now....

MY car with link pin front end, caster shims and about 1/16'' tow-in run straight and true.... Heavy duty sway bars front and rear make it handle like a go kart...

I run P255/60/15 on rear and P225/60/14 on front and it fills wheel wells nicely...

I ran 295/50-15 tires at first and the 275/60-15 are on my buggy now.

I like the gearing that the 275/60 series tires gives on my buggy.

I can cruise at 65-70 mph with ease and the engine is not revved way up.

70 mph gets me 3100 rpm.

This is with a 1967 trans with 4.12 gears.

Clonebug, I'm guessing with the FI/Turbo mill that low end wasn't a problem wit the taller 275 60 R15s. I like the idea of less revving at 65 mph, but wonder if they would be too tall for a stock '72 1600 DP? Any photos of it with the 295 50 R15s?

You are correct in that there is no trouble at any speed but I never really noticed any problems when I didn't have the turbo either. Wink Cool

I ran it for 7 years N/A.

The only place you might feel it would be on a long grade like going up a mountain pass at 6% for a longer duration.

That is where the turbo really helps since I can hold 60 mph with ease up any grade. Any time the rpm's are anywhere near 2700-3000 it is instaboost.

I do not have any pics of it with the 295/50/15's. I had them on some deep dish chevy stock chrome rally wheels with hub caps and while it looked pretty cool they stuck out too much I thought, plus the tires were from my Brother's 1970 LS-6 Chevelle and were quite bald so they only lasted me a year or so.

My yellow buggy pictured above did not have any problems with a stock 1600 and running a PIC 30 carb. You can go to Tire Rack.com and look at overall height of the tires to compare. I was running a 4.12 ring and pinion.

Thanks for the replies, guys. I think I've narrowed it down to either the 275 60s or 295 50s. The 275s are 1.4 inches taller than the 295s--guess I'd better verify my gear ratio before deciding.
