I am trying to restore my 63 to as original I can. A couple questions I have:

1) From the factory was the dash front (I'm not referring to the the padded vinyl top)painted to match the color of the body of the car or was it just black?

2) On the dash front was the Karmann Emblem included? I have seem some with and some without. Mine seems to have it but would probably have to removed to paint the dash face.

3) Was the 63 OEM sterring wheel the one with the horn ring? Mine does not seem to have this ring - curious if it should to be as close to factory.

4) Was the stereing wheel black, white, or colored to match the dash front?

5) Should the steering wheel drive shaft be painted or left black so as to be period/factory correct?

Most of your questions are answered in the technical section above
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/paintcodesghia.php
The small dash emblem is a "later", 67+ thing, not for 63.
Dash is body color, lower body color if 2 tone.
The tech section also has copies of most years owners manual.
From 63 owners manual. Your steering wheel.

Thanks - so the steering wheel was white with horn ring

and it looks like the shift knob was also white?

I cannot tell from that manual if the drive shaft is also white

I always thought the steering wheel & gearshift colour went with the interior colour options rather than being all one colour for the same year

Sort of...
According to the chart all the 63 steering columns are silver beige except the blue cars. Sea blue, Pacific blue and Polar had ice blue steering columns. Gearshift and handbrakes were grey-black.
It looks like as production went on these items were almost all a shade of black (grey-black or lava).

One thing I can't tell from the photo in the manual - is the shifter a straight shaft or an angled one?

Should be angled, with one bend in it.
