|
|
I have a 1978 cabriolet beetle
My suspension is very creaky. The ride is good and appears to have a lot of recent parts. Over bumps etc the suspension creaks LOUDLY!
I have sprayed the rubber bushes with silicone spray but still she creaks. The noise appears to be coming from the diagonal arm area on both rear sides. I have sprayed these to no avail. Any suggestions?
I don't think parts need replacing as they appear to be good. |

You can't run urethane and expect quiet. New rubber bushes with talcum will do the trick.
Mr Duncan is probably right, though. _________________ There has only ever been one man who was perfect, and they nailed Him to a cross. |

It's really creaky!!!
I take it the talcum powder doesn't work on bushes that ARENT brand new? If not what is the best way to quiet the torsion bar bushes down?
Thanks |

I don't think you can really do anything about it without disassembling it. Once you're that far into it you might as well replace the torsion arm bushings and that's the time to use the talcum powder. The bushings aren't all that expensive, it's the labor to get to them. On my kit car the person that built it didn't replace them on the worn out chassis before mounting the body. Now the only way to replace them is to remove the body. Fortunately the factory made sure it's not as hard to do on a stock bodied Type I. _________________ "Just $99 down and $64 a month for 36 months buys you a brand new Volkswagen Beetle!"

I have had some success using silicone grease, and using a thin grease needle to get it back into the bushings. I did loosen the torsion bar cap plates, but did not take anything apart. Loosening them relaxed everything enough to get the needle in. |

mine creaks after I've been driving in the rain.
I just stick the skinny tube from my Superlube in the housing and squirt the bushing, work the suspension, then let it sit, repeat if still squeaky.
the superlube sprays like oil but sets up as a grease when it flashes off. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

I used liberal amounts of Never Sieze the last time I adjusted them. No noise, and I need to go back in and firm it up a bit, so I'm hoping the NS will make it a much easier job. Not that it was difficult in the first place. _________________ He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. I sprayed silicone spray practically everywhere, I haven't had a good run, but driving around the corner, I swear it creaked more! I'll try giving some of your ideas a go on my next set of days off. |
