|
|
Right. My rear parcel shelf has two large oval speaker holes cut into it.
Originally I had planned to do a nice job covering it with my brown carpet set from Newton. Turns out- there's no piece in the kit for that - and for good reason:that's not the way OG was. Now there's a new wrinkle.
It never occurred to me that the carpet kit wouldn't extend to the rear parcel tray. AND I haven't bothered taking pics of what people do.
What do you guys do? Any pics? (I have done searches here but want to compare people's experiences.)
I suppose I have several options:
- I see KG parts sell what look like black or white (glare danger) plastic parcel shelf caps.
- I could cover with tan vinyl
- I ask Newton for a strip of brown Narrow Weave. I think I like this option best.
Oh... And are there pics of how that seat clips back?
Thanks!!!!

Hi Dorian, I'm heading the same way and have decided to manufacture my own rear shelf and to cover it with vinyl matching my dash and door cards. I have extra vinyl from TMI for that purpose.
I thought of using matching carpet, as you mention, but decided against that. It just feels wrong - to me anyway - to have carpet at that height in the car. I don't think I've ever had a car that had carpet that high up. I've always had something matching the dash and door cards.
That's just my opinion.
Can't help you with the way the seat clips back - mine is still in pieces! _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Hmmmm - thanks chief. I think I agree with you. Carpet so high up seems wrong. I think I'll get my hands on some tan vinyl. Seems like it's also a good idea to stick that to the interior where the steel may be peeking through the carpet. |

It looks like an after thought. |

Thanks! That idea is dead.
I think it'll have to be tan vinyl. |

Dorian's car is a '71. It would use the pieces that I have indicated above, not the earlier strap and post arrangement shown in that thread. _________________ Mike

I have a stack of options that I pulled from different cars including...
Black ABS plastic
Sheet aluminum contoured to match the tray (not pretty - needs upholstery)
Wood that angles up from the seat to the window (no defroster vent)
Black padded vinyl
White padded vinyl
Of these options, I plan to use the ABS plastic on in my '64 w/ black interior and I'll recover the aluminum piece for my '68 w/ unknown interior at this point. The other pieces I've taken to swap meets, but nobody recognizes what they are. |

Just for the record, the thread I referenced does in fact cover both the earlier and later styles of latch.
While all the pictures posted directly in the thread are of the earlier style latch, there is a link to a page from the 1968 Karmann Ghia Owners Manual posted near the end of that thread that shows the plastic catch you reference.
Apparently you posted your info while I was still composing mine, so I missed that you had already provided some photos.
Here in the Ghia forum we are so helpful to one another that we fight over who can provide the correct answer first.
It's all good. |
