|
|
Back in the years 1973 or so, my superbeetle starter quit working. The salvage yeard asked me if I wanted a 914 starter to replace it with because the 914 had a pilot bushing and was a better starter. I took it and used it, no problems. My starter on my 68 bug just died. can I do the same thing here and use a 914 starter??, |

914 uses a 215mm flywheel (same as the Type 4) and I don't think it will work on a Beetle. _________________ Glenn

worked great on a 73 so is there any difference in 68 or 73, I'm thinking not. |

according to the post 914 starter vs VW starter http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=545421 the porsche 914 uses a SR17x starter that will work on Type 1, 1972-83 Type 2, Type 3, and 4, wich does seem suprising since the type 4 flywheel is larger but aircooled.net also sells Bosch SR-17 Starter, Rebuilt, 12 Volt, .7hp (.85kW), 12V Automatic and Auto-Stick Transmissions for Type 1, 1972-83 Type 2, Type 3, and 4, SR-17 so I guess I learned something new today. _________________ ____________

yes, but what is the difference really between 1968 and 1971? the engines are interchangable, because Im running a 73 engine in the 68. So that 914 starter must work. The man that told me this and sold it to me was the owner of a huge import junkyard, he seemed to know his stuff. That starter sounds different and is very smooth compared to a regular vw starter. |

yes the Porsche 914 starter should work on a the 67 up type one (or older type one if the flywheel has been changed to a 130 tooth) it is the exact same starter as the auto stick type one starter and does not need a starter bushing. _________________ ____________
