So I was going to replace the broken speaker in my dash last weekend and when I pulled it out, it looked like it was from 1966 almost. The question I have is, there wasn't a speaker mount for it. It looks like it might only be 4 inches. And there was a gasket between the speaker and the dash. The speaker itself was just screwed into the dash. Is that normal? Is it 4 inches for that speaker? I assume it's just using the mount holes. I was thinking about just getting a 4 inch speaker and replacing that one. Thanks in advance !

I'm not sure I completely understand your questions, but I will try and help a little.
I have seen speakers mounted directly to the dash, and I have also seen them mounted using a bracket. It may have to do with whatever the parts dept had, or didn't have in stock at the time of the radio install, since they were all dealer I stalled, but that's just my guess.
WW has a pretty good speaker (I have one in my 58 ), and if you choose to use a bracket, there are a bunch for sale here in the classifieds.

You need a bracket to adapt the new speaker mounting hole pattern to the old vw pattern. You could make one out od 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch MDF. As I found out most modern speakers do not mount flush the center channel is raised from flush. You can buy a flush speaker from your FLAPS but you can buy better for the same price. You could buy this too

that looks like the speaker that was in there (mine the fact that its very old and crumbling apart). I think im just going to order that one of WW, thanks for the info, if its a dealer option install im not going to worry about a mount and just install it like it was before. thanks again for the information.
