|
|
Hey everyone...Ken from Tucson here. It's my first post, and my first VW.
After driving the car for two days (approximately 62 miles, total) the engine began making a noise that sounds EXACTLY like a squealing fan belt. After many headaches adjusting, I removed the belt and ran the engine for a couple seconds...
The squealing noise is still there. No joke, even mimics the belt sound on shutdown.
Any insights? |

Hate to say it; a bearing, possibly. |

Stick a rubber hose in one ear, and move the other end around the engine bay. The source will then be obvious. |

Agreed, a mechic's stethoscope or similar tool should be used to narrow down exactly where the noise is coming from... could be the distributor is at fault here or maybe something has fallen in between the case an pulley and is rubbing. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

I had a loud squaling noise in my 54 beetle that ended up coming from the speedo cable. |

All the squealing in my VWs comes from the passengers!
Any update from the original poster?
Check to make sure nothing fell down into the lower pulley well. Tools and other things have a way of disappearing in there sometimes and they can make funny noises or sparks. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

Well...there's nothing rubbing on the tin, no extreme play at the crank pulley (lateral or axial), and my redneck stethoscope says it's coming from the distributor region. Will be getting new cap/rotor/plugs/wires on Thursday. Read somewhere a gnarly cap can get really noisy. On the upside, will also be doing some suspension work soon, and getting the guts out to refresh all the gaskets and seals.

Noise from the distributor, quite likely it is worn out then. Pull the distributor out and check for excessive play between the shaft and housing. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Not necessarily worn out but the distributor does require some maintenance attention that is VERY often overlooked. The squeeling is it's way of telling you that it needs lubrication. Vacuum advance distributors need a little dab of Bosch grease or similar on the points cam. In addition mechanical advance distributors need a bit of oil down where the weights move and the little wick under the rotor needs some oil too. _________________ Roads Scholar &

Will be servicing/inspecting the distributor post-haste. Triple checked, and the noise is definitely coming from there. Will post an update NLT Thursday. Thanks for all the great help, everyone! |
