I think it does, I will have to check it tomorrow. Are other aspects of the body consistent with a 64' euro standard? Like the fenders and decklid? They seem to have the same original paint, looks like ruby red shows through in a couple places. I was going to keep other parts of this car original-ish (correct handles etc) but if the body/chassis don't even match why bother? |
With the car now being fifty or so years old, it's rather difficult to tell what is original to the car and what has been modified. That said, it has three screw doors which puts it post April '62ish, the sunroof handle is the late folding style which didn't come out 'til '63, it has two piece sunroof rails which were replaced with one piece versions in April '63ish... all Euro Standards I've seen (and truthfully that isn't many) did not have body trim or trim holes while yours does... your car doesn't have holes for overriders in the front apron, but they could have been eliminated (your car also seems to lack holes for front turn signals, all post-'60 Bugs up until the bumper mounted light Mexibeetles would have had them).
Gut feeling tells me either the sunroof is grafted in or you have an early to mid '63 body on a '64 pan. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Don't know why but for some reason the thought of this bums me out... |

I wouldn't let it bum me out in the least! Looks like a pretty cool car with a lot of potential, would make a very enjoyable driver in my opinion. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Do verify the VIN behind the spare. |

And the verdict is... They match!
So now I can check the M code data base and see what I have right? |

Congrats on your matching numbers. Haven't seen a listing where you can find out much of anything about your Bug based on the VIN (Bugs don't have M code plates like Busses), but if you really wanted to you could send off for a birth certificate from the factory which would tell you the original configuration of your car when it was built.
Doing a bit more research, still haven't come across any European Standards with body trim, but the Canadian Custom did have it (kind of their version of the Standard)... the problem is I can't find if the Canadian Custom still had the ragtop sunroof after '63 or not.
Does your glove box door have holes in it for chrome trim? _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Yeah there is three holes in the glove box door that came in the box of parts I got with the car. |

Ok good. Looks like your bug is a '64. The decklid looks like its a 64 decklid.
To ME, it's not beyond the realm of possibilities that VW of Germany sneaked in some folding ragtops, two months into the new model year. |

Not that it's that big of a deal, but those are the wrong tail lights for a '63.
Nice project! _________________ .

I think it still has the original perf. headliner, so a graft is probably not likely.

I'm no expert on when the headliner changed from multiple pieces to one piece, but I'm pretty sure the 63 model year still had the multi-piece headliner. Can someone confirm?
EDIT:
Found this picture in the Low Mileage Barnfind '63 thread.

Got some new springs for $70 on eBay. What else should I replace while I take it apart to do that swap out? Pretty sure the whole rest of the front end is original. |

So thoughts on what the original color is? Do I win the contest for having the most layers of paint sloped on top of each Other? I count six![/img] |

According to your VIN, your car was built in October 1963, which makes it a 1964 model year. |

Finally got it moved into my garage and have started cleaning it all out. Still had the original carpet (I would assume any way with how rotted it was). I have started to notice that the passenger side door is pretty stiff. This car has been repainted at least 5 times, is this an indication of bad re-assembly after paint or could it be a symptom of a much large body/structure issue? |

It's looks like it might only have been painted twice to me. The grey might be primer and the greens are what looks like body filler. |

this is quite strange, here in europe also form 1964 they discontinued the ragtop on deluxes.
But all the characteristic to me refer to a MY63:
- rear decklid with small license plate light and long indentations ( in italy we call it the"moustache" decklid )
- one piece headliner is correct for a mid-late 63 model
I saw a lot of early MY64 models, they still retain the front indicators in the advanced position ( until dec 63 at 13 centimeters from the headlight ) but they had from the beginning the big license light with the shorter indentations decklid.
check also this:
1963 has the half ring horn on the steering , 1964 doesn't
1963 door panels with edge piping, 1964 doesn't
1963 door window crank with triangle reinforcement welded on the arm, 1964 doesn't _________________ Italian 1964 "ruby red cocaine bug"

Thanks for your input. I still need to check the fenders for signs of deleting the turn signals. It had the support holes for the front bumper deleted and it was a good job - so it wouldn't surprise me if the turn signals were the same way.
As far as the steering wheel goes - it is an aftermarket model installed by one of the PO's
Door panels are long gone.
I have the original window cranks I will check them when I get home this evening. |

No triangle reinforcement on the window cranks.
The body rubber is in pretty bad shape I know I will be replacing it its just a matter of timing. I won't be painting it for at least a couple years, should I get new seals, window rubber etc. in the mean time?
I will get some progress pics up soon. Got the passenger seat out and started on the tar board - thankfully we had a cold snap this past week and I was able to chip out nearly all of it. Getting pretty excited, I was expecting to see a ton of rust, but with the exception of some minor surface rust there doesn't appear to be any issues so far! |

I would suggest waiting on purchasing the rubber seals. All of the seals needed are readily available and you should get them within a weeks time if ordered from places like Wolfsburg West, West Coast Metric, etc., plus your estimated paint time frame usually ends up being longer than anticipated for one reason or another. _________________ .
