I know I'm full of questions; but I want to restore my 50 11G correctly. When painting the pan what should be the correct process? Gloss black? Semi gloss or flat? What brand of primer and paint to use? _________________ 1950 Hoffman 11 G 1-0174999

Are you using the old pan or are you doing a new pan? The right thing to do in either case use POR- 15 .I'm currently putting new pans in the 59' beetle and 62' ghia i just got. It's pretty much the best you can put on an old chassis. Beware that once you open it, use it fairly quickly, as the stuff doesn't have a very long shelf life after opening it

By restore you want it to be refinished correctly and have all the correct items in place? _________________ Happyasshell

I used Por15 for the 51cc rag, with a very good result, compare to a 53pan in my garage it looks pretty the same and gives your pan the right protection. |

1 sandblast/ strip/clean to bare metal. 2 etch prime.3 epoxy prime.
5 finish with urethane semi gloss black. I would use good top name brand automotive paint.
Por 15 works OK but not as good as above.
To make it completely og finish than just dip it in semigloss enamel then bake it in a really big oven. |

I'll add my opinion, I like Eastwoods Chassis Black products. Media blasting is a must, followed by their black etching primer, then their semigloss chassis black. I find it very durable and very close to the original finish. It is an epoxy enamel.... _________________ John Henry

Years ago when building super yachts I had a long discussion with one of the international paint suppliers. we were discussing durability of various paint systems. These guys had to provide a warranty on bits of steel and aluminium that sit in salt water so really have to have their .... sorted.
He posed the challenge to me - what did I think made etch primer stick. I hadn't really thought about this. The answer is acid. Acid plus metal plus water = well you know corrosion - rust if it happens to be steel. Media blasting will provide an acceptable profile for the paint to stick - I always go straight with an epoxy primer - not sure why I need acid on the metal. Note - the molecular structure of epoxy is "more waterproof" than other two pack systems which is why its favoured in the marine industry. |
