i am working on a 75 bay bought some used wheels off craigslist

when did vw switch these from bolt lug nuts to studs

really surprised to see studs i know even newer vw use bolts

am i missing something?

I think vangons use bolts in the front.

Bay Window Buses always used studs. Split Windows did not. Vanagons use lug bolts on the front, studs on the rear. So to answer your question, they switched to studs on Aug. 1, 1967.

My 68', 69' and 70's all have had lug bolts.

Wide five use bolts, small five (disc brake) use studs and nuts.

68-70 use Lug Bolts.
71-79 use Lug Nuts. In conjunction with wheel studs.
