Never had this situation before but I have the acceptable 1" of free play to the right but to the left, I have about 3".

TRW steering box, stock suspension and ride height, alignment in the last 6 months.

This play has developed over the last month or so.

Before this, I did have the steering wheel off to replace the steering column bushing. Maybe I didn't put it back on perfectly centered and if it was centered the play would be even side to side.

I don't want to just go tightening the steering box. So what do you fellas think is the best first thing to look at?

how do you figure you have more play to one side than the other? Did you figure by wheels pointing straight ahead and steering wheel straight results in that?

As an alignment guy, it doesn't work that way. you have two separate but possibly related problems: 4" of play and off-center.That much play is a little scary. I'd say tighten up the box as a start but if it's under warranty, call them up.

I figured this only by centering the wheel when in the driver's seat after noticing play during driving. With the steering wheel centered I get 1" of play turning right and about 3" when turning it left. When turning left, I have to get through the free play before the car turns. Not so on right turns....right steering engages more quickly. I can tighten box and also check the wheel for center. Thanks for the tip.
