|
|
I've finnally started the restoration of my recentlty aquired 67 ghia vert. I'm going to try and keep a documentation of the entire restoration here with as many pics as possible. Hopefully this may help others in their restoration.
The car is a 1967 Ghia convertible. Its history is very uniuqe. It was purchased new in 67 and traveled just 22,300 miles before it was involved in a front end collision in late 1971. The car was totaled by the insurace company. It was then purchased at auction to be repaired. It went into a barn and for one reason or another it was never fixed! The car is like a time capsul! It's never been hacked or fiddled with like most high milage ghias you normally see. All original and complete.
The car was hit in the drivers side front. The car will need a complete drivers fender, complete nose section, and half of the passenger fender. I have a complete rust free front clip for parts. There is no major rust. As for the frame, after extensive messuring the frame is perfectly straight.
The mechanicals are fairly straight. The engine is missing its carb. I am planning on a complete engine dissessembly, cleaning and rebuild with new seals. I does only have 22K on the drivetrain so I do not antisipate any problems besides new rubber seals. I am planning on a complete brake over haul with new hard lines, rubber lines, drum resurfacing and new pads and hydrolics. My basic restoration schedual is below:
1.Disassemble body down to shell. Front end body repair.
2.Repair any additional body damage and small rust repairs on the outer rockers.
3.Scuff body and straighten for paint. (Since this car is still in original paint I am not planning on taking the entire car down to bare metal.)
4.Brace body with 1x1 steel tubing
5.Remove body and mount to my rotissory for paint. (I haven't decided weither I am going to paint it myself or farm the work out)
6.Dissasemble chassis
7.Sand blast pan
8.Send pan out for powder coating
9.Rebuild engine and tranny
10.After pan is back install brake system and get pan into rolling chassis
11.Paint body
12.Reinstall body
13.Install Wire harnness and entire electrics like gauges etc..
14.Sound proof with dynomat
15.Interior installation
16.Top restoration and installation (farming out to chucks)
17.Final reassymbly
I'm anticipateing a 2 year time frame depending on money. More to come as I get rolling. (sorry for really bad spelling!) _________________ -1970 Ghia Coupe (Sold)

If the price was right you should have some extra funds to get the new panels you need. Plenty of donors out there. How mangled are the inner panels. Looks like one of the inner fender will need replacing. Someone just posted a link to a VW scrap yard in PA. Looked like lots of Ghias there. 100 miles from us. Im in Perry not far from Belair by the way. |
I already have a complete front clip, and a whole other pan with perfect rockers and heater channels. They came with the car. The inner panels are bad forward of the gas tank but I'm just going to swap out almost the entire front clip from about three inches in front of the windsheild. I'd rather fix somthing like this then a million mile rust bucket thats straight. Oh and you did some real nice work on your vert. Boy do I have some work to do! _________________ -1970 Ghia Coupe (Sold)

Does anyone know how this turned out? He sounded pretty excited to get started and save this car.
Just wondering... _________________ 67 Ghia Cabriolet |

This is my old car, If he is not doing anything with it I would LOVE to have it back. I tried to contact him through the site about 3 years ago and never heard anything. If anyone knows anything please contact me.
Thanks |
