Again another great reality check from VOLKSWAGNUT ..

You're probably going to have to go with something like the Rancho Pro Sand transaxle at minimum if you're not going to make a lot of power/flog it too hard

If you are going to make some power/flog it you will probably need a Mendeola

Well if thats the case - late mexican engines don't require valve adjustments. BOth Gilmore & ICE offer AC units that don't sap hp. Heat? Really, VWs do provide adequate heat for most peeps and if need be, there are accessory heaters (for example, eberspacher) you can run if you really have to. No need to re-invent the wheel and add a whole lot of expense doing a GM engine when there are far cheaper, less of a hassle, better alternatives.

I'm planning on getting a 63-69 Beetle and looking to get a Chevrolet engine, preferably 4-cylinder, that is easily adaptable to fit one.
I only trust pre 1980 GMC motors ! May forget the Baja maddness soon if no better responce & stay Chevrolet ALL the way! Thanks for the suggestions so far!

Are you for real? I mean you aren't serious right? Baja madness? Chevy powered beetle mutant isn't Baja madness, it's a little boy that can't make up his mind.

The best set up for a BAJA ! I cant find a running VW to evon test drive or look at thats not locked! Were selling it for the owener & dont have the keys! O well ! Defroster solutions: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=328159&highlight=defrost

AC options: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=194082&highlight=air+conditioner

Valve adjustments (they aren't that scary): http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=421405&highlight=valve+adjustment

You should do them every 3000 miles, but many get away with every 6000 miles.

Use the search function in this forum, and you will find the answers. You may be more comfortable with pre-1980 GM products, but with a little knowledge anyone can work on a VW.

"A little knowledge" is a dangerous thing.

Thank you Cseay 1 ! That looke intersting enuf! This is the kind of info I was looking for! I would have thot after all thes years of Street Bajas, that someone had one set up with AC & good Heater by now! The heater seems simple enuf to fix! Again Iv known nothing but GMC so This is a all new world to me! I did set in one & my boot rubbed the brake peddle & the ridge running down the middle of this tiny beast! I found a set of bigger wider peddles some whwere on the internet! Ill not give up on this project just yet then! Thanks one & all!

Something like this??? 4.3L V6, but it's never gonna fit in the back of a bug.

4.3 is a good choice.. although newer than the OP's preference for pre-1980, it is basically a 350 with two cylinders lopped off and you can get 4bbl carb intakes and HEI distributors to run non-ecu setups.

Hot Rod editor David Freiburger and staff editor Mike Finnegan slap a Powerstroke turbo on a 4.3 powered Junkyard dog 240Z called the Rotsun in an episode of Roadkill.

In another episode they trade an LS powered Chevy stepside for a VW baja.

Look at aircooled.net .. John at aircooled.net often includes descriptions on a lot of the parts such as "this part has perfect o.e. fit and quality" or "this part is poor fit and poor quality but nothing else is available". Also lots of great technical info on the site. It would be a good jumping off point for you to start

Other reputable vendors include Airhead Parts, CB Performance, J-Bugs, and Wolfsburg West
