Ok so i have had my baja for about a year and a half now and have had a blast and figured i should start a build thread. Since i got this thing i have been slowly collecting all the parts for a mid travel build and finally have everything for the front (just need a welder and little misc).
ill just start uploading pictures and add coments to them
originally paid $700 for this bug looking like this
then painted it white
New rear tires, rear bumper mounted andlights
then got some Crow harnesses, prebuilt rollcage, race trim seats(NEVER AGAiN!!!)
got some centerline front wheels and tractor tires
over kill lights (i have a problem with lights)
then got a fuel cell to mount on the rear shelf
nasty mess to remove
put some speakers into the quarter panels
got Shocks for the new beam going on (soon i hope)
the beam thats going to go on is a 10 over, 4x1 arms
cracked a bump stop in half haha
aluminum dash have to get pictures of it now installed
out playing around
oops rock sliced the sidewall
new rear bumper
more lights
my dad picked up a baja too (1967)
got a Led bar from a budy and decided to rewire the whole bug before cutting the frame horn and redoing the cage.
found a killer deal on some true bead lock robby gordon wheels (actual robby gordons)
put a panel on the rear bumper
new wiring
my dads baja slowly getting there (trans is shot so collecting the parts for irs)
other parts for the front end i have been saving
when i cut out the dash for the aluminum one

Looks great! Did you cut the fiberglass or stock fenders? I love that look. _________________ 1966 Mustang

Thanks, They are just the standard Baja fiberglass fenders I had to cut them because the front tires are to big until I have my new beam on but I am putting a fiberglass 1 piece on it when the beam goes on and tried to cut the current fenders to look close to what the new 1 piece will look like. _________________ 65 baja project 2nd but going to be the first project finished |

well im really bad at keeping up on updates but progress has been slow even though i have been working on it every weekend along with my dads baja so here are some pictures of the more recent work
while working on his car my dad slipped with the grinder and cut his hand pretty good but the worst of it was he got blood splashed all over my car
my dad cut the frame horn off of his today and will be starting his cage hopefully this week

I used an ocolating tool from harbor freight. It took forever and just ended up cutting it out to make room for my new cage _________________ 65 baja project 2nd but going to be the first project finished |

The car is looking great! Also its pretty darn cool that you sucked your Dad into the Baja Bug vortex! My Son and I have been working on a Baja project for the past year and a half and recently got it road worthy... Have a great time working with the old Man!!! _________________ Cheers!

Thanks some day mine and my dads will be built to the same quality and suspension as you and your sons baja, my dad actually sucked me into the baja thing haha he has had a few bajas over the years but never had one that was running since i was born and just all the storys of his and my uncles old bugs along with riding in just one baja you get hooked. All my friends are building trucks but everytime they ride in my bug they want one. It makes it hard right now since im finally doing so much at once it feels like it has been down forever but making sure the cage looks good and will be strong takes forever well and building paycheck to paycheck _________________ 65 baja project 2nd but going to be the first project finished |

Looking good! Do yourself a favor though and get rid of this shitty fan shroud setup, and move the oil cooler away from the fan cold air intake. Your engine will thank you!

i am not very good at keeping up my build progress online other than instagram but here is some more update pictures.
getting better at welding slowly.
sorry about the bad photo quality the evening/night time is about the only bearable time to work on the bug in the 110 degree heat and humidity we have been having these past few weeks.
Hopefully will get almost everything on the front end done this weekend and maybe start my fuel cell mount _________________ 65 baja project 2nd but going to be the first project finished |

I'm curious how you tied the front of the cage to where it passes what's left of the front of the floor pan. |
I haven't yet but i am going to weld a plate to the bottom tying it in alont with another to the front of the body. when i started cutting the holes for the tubing to come threw i did not realize that i was cutting where the body and the pan bolt together till i was about half way threw. _________________ 65 baja project 2nd but going to be the first project finished |

well im horrible at keeping up online of my build progress other than instagram but here is some updates on my car and my dads car.
got a 2.3l pinto engine to put in my car hopefully going to get it mounted by the middle of December since i only get one day a week to work on the car right now and the radiator i picked up for it
the front end before i finished the double sheers just havent gotten a new picture of it yet.
front of my dads car
building in the driveway can be tough sometimes haha
and this brings us to current. I cut off the frame horns and mounted the irs pivot brackets next need to finish my arms then start on shock towers.

as I said before I never remember to keep updating my build but I finally got to drive it in the begining of december and was extremely impressed with the handling till i ripped the rear arms to pieces but working on more gussets and have it back out soon enough. Also need to get the body on since i decided to remove the pan and cage the bottom of the chassis and do a custom floor panel. Well heres a bunch of random pictures not in any order for those that are like me and love project pictures.
Bottom of my dads baja
these short days were killing me so i brought it to work for a week to finish it up in the evenings after i got off
did a quick wiring harness still have so much little things to finish up
finally when it made it out to occotillo wells for the first trip. Car did great and went threw the whoops at 55 with no issues except the carb issue where i cant get above 4500 rpms
also had an issue with the car spraying oil out the crank case vent but finally figured that out.
had some bad camber from when the arms decided to tear
new gussets to the arms hopefully wont have that problem again

Nice work! That turned out pretty awesome. Any plans to put the bug body back on? Or just going to run it more as a rail? |
