I need to replace the dash pad on my '65 Ghia. Has anyone purchased replacement dash pads recently. If so, which vendor and what is your level of satisfaction with the product you purchased? Chris |

After giving up on trying to refurb my original pad I got the fiberglass cover from House of Ghia then had my upholsterer put in a pad and cover to match my interior. I'm very happy with the results.
If you're interested I can give you info on the upholstery shop I go to. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"

I'll give you a "like" for a stunning interior and I hope you won't mind if I follow your example. Now please tell me where can I get that under-the-dash pad and the woodgrain vinyl. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

You can get all three and KGPR. Theirs are "show" quality. Top pad, knee pad, and woodgrain dash face. _________________ -Jared

Thanks! Feel free to "follow"....I appreciate the compliment. That's what's great about this Forum, good place to get ideas and tips.
I wanted everything to match as close as possible that's why I went with the HOG fiberglass dash cover and had it recovered with material similar to the Porsche seats. The under dash pad is the original that was recovered with the new material. I did get the woodgrain vinyl from KGPR. I have since installed a front console with matching woodgrain face and same color material sides where I plan to install the extra gauges. I'll try to post pics as I go along the process. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"

I like how you had the dash re-covered. Definitely stands out more than the stock black. _________________ -Jared

Love the stitching on that HOG dash top, nice work! |
Thanks! It's called the French stitch and any good upholstery shop should be able to do it. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"

I would do black in any case, as lighter colors reflect awfully onto the windshield. _________________ David Ruby

Nice! What's something like that go for? Obviously material affects the price but how labor intensive is it to upholster the dash? _________________ 77 westy 2.0 FI

Thank you all for the compliments.
I wish I could answer your question ivwshane, but I purchased the fiberglass pad from HOG way back
when Jim Patterson owned the shop in the early 90's.
Flash forward 15 years...Mike Gregory had taken over HOG and I had saved enough for a restoration.
Mike had just discovered the trick of covering the glass dash with the vinyl and doing the French stitching.
( I think mine was only the second car he did this to at the time).
He was really excited about it and wanted to throw in the vinyl and stitching for free!
(Those of you who know Mike won't be surprised by this).
It really does put a finished look to the dash and we are really happy with the outcome. _________________ 67 Ghia Cabriolet |

Sorry to be off topic, but did you mount your speakers to the fiberglass kick panels that some places sell, or did you mount them to the steel body itself? The fiberglass kick panels usually stick out quite a bit and yours don't look like that at all.

Stitching up a cover for the top dash pad is not difficult, but you will need a walking foot sewing machine for starters. I stitched matching covers for both my HOG top dash pad cover, and both stock lower knee pads using the French seams, and getting the seam to end up in the middle of the radius along the entire length is difficult, and getting it straight can be tricky too. Laying out your seam can give you a chance to check for straightness before you do any stitching.
The next obstacle is getting the stitching around the vents in the right place since the top of the top pad is the first thing you see when you look into the car. The French seams sure look nice though, so it's well worth it. _________________ The economy is in a state of disaster, we have NO time for common sense! |

I made the panels out of fairly thin fiberboards which I carefully bent to conform to the angle of the body, allowing enough space to fit the cone of the speakers on the back without touching the body. I then glued the carpet over the panel after sawing the speaker holes. That way I was able to make it really close that it does not take away legroom.
ivwshane: I had both top and bottom pads covered by a good upholstery guy who really did not charge me as much as I thought he would (or should have) . You do have to make sure he can do French stitch as I had one advise me to just paint it, leading me to believe he did not have the ability to do the stitch and the fitting. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"

This is how it looks now with the new gauges still to be installed on the console:

O2Cooled, did you build the console, or did you find one already made?
thanks!

I was going to build one from scratch but thought of calling TMI. Luckily they had the basic shell upholstered with same color material as my dash. I then removed the front and bottom(where the shift is) panels then replaced them with wood that has nice graining(using the panels I removed as template), stained them to match the dash and finished with poly varnish. I'm now prepping the installation of the extra gauges on the upper portion. _________________ "Sometimes people forget they signed up to a HELP & SHARE Forum not a pissing contest"
