So I test drove and made an offer on a nice '84 Westy. My only concern is that I have to press down (like I'm shifting into reverse) in order to get into first gear. Is this normal? If not, any ideas on how to fix?

Thanks for helping out a newbie...

it's not normal
the shifter linkage would require new bushings & adjustment to shift like new once again.. less than $100ish in parts say an hour labor at a competent import repair shop with a lift.

it's a "relative" easy repair. The seller should have the care & morals to take care of this before listing 4sale. it'll cost them more than the repair in loss of sale/interest.
