Hey Everyone! I am hitting the road for about a week with my two sons. Sort of a last hurrah before school starts for Owen (16) and Elliot (eighteen) leaves for college. I have tried to get away in the bus with the boys for years and have always let work get in the way. This year I said screw it, we're going.

This is a very loosely planned road trip taking mostly US routes and secondary roads. We plan on camping along most of the way. The route may change significantly from the original plan, but here is the ballpark plan.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

We are going to visit my Mom and sister in Cincinnati. How long we stay will alter the size of the loop that we travel. One of the boys wants to see Nashville. I would like to see the the area where The Last of the Mohicans was filmed, near Asheville. I used to travel to Roanoke quite a bit so we may swing by there and drive along the Blue Ridge. Everything else would be up in the air.

The bus seems to be running well. Never really had any major problems with it besides a stupid ground issue. In the process of hunting that down, the bus got quite an overhaul and major tune up last year. I am going to change the oil, pack up and leave in a couple of days.

We are excited to get out on the road. Keep an eye out for us! Any suggestions for things to see or avoid are welcome. Depending on our timing, it would be great to meet some of you along our route.

A friend might be joining us on the first few legs. He wants to visit friends and family in Myrtle Beach and Charleston. I wish I had enough time to swing down your way. I love it there.

I think I know where your avatar was taken.

Come on down. We can always use another Bus. It's been nice all summer and only in the past few weeks gotten hot and humid. Expecting lots of rain this weekend.

Impressed if you know where it was taken. It's a little place tucked in between a few warehouses over near Harbor Freight. I don't believe it was ever a true filling station, but the owner built or bought it and decorated it.

Don't miss Asheville! Your boys are old enough to share a beer w/ Dad.

Full Moon Bus Club gets together every first Sunday at Hi Wire Brewing, and there's plenty of other VW-related happenings. Drop me a PM when you are close.

Hey Tim when are you setting out? There's a great campout and VW Show next weekend in Columbus, OH. The COVVC Volksfest is on Saturday and the Dixie Bus Gathering starts on the 6th. If you have any issues in NY, I'm in Syracuse and I'm only about 10 minutes from the Thruway. Not sure which way you were planning to go first but if you're in the area, stop at the campground for a night or 2! I'm leaving on Tuesday the 5th and I'll be back home Sunday the 10th. Have a safe trip dude!!

Trying to set out either Sunday or Monday. If our friend joins us we go south first clockwise on the route and drop him off somewhere so he can head to Myrtle Beach/Charleston. Otherwise we go counter counter-clockwise which takes us in your direction first.

Like I said this is a very loose trip so I am not exactly sure where we will be or when. We could definitely be in range for either of these events. I will make sure I have the info with me just in case.

Thanks!

If you need a place to camp between Knoxville and Nashville Fall Creek Falls or Rock Island, TN are both amazing. If you get closer to Nashville, you can have my driveway, I'm 30 miles outside the city. Mammoth Cave in KY is awesome too. It's about 30 miles off your route though.

Great idea. I visited once long ago. My kids are really into architecture and design.

This is good to know as I wasn't sure where we might stay in this area. Thanks.

Looks like early in your trip you are crossing N.Y. up north of the fingerlakes. If you are going anywhere near Cortland, almost straight south of Syracuse, I would recommend lunch at the A&W. From what I understand it is the only A&W in the U.S. that still has car-hop service. Fresh made Root-beer, and great burgers. Not to mention a good photo-op. It's over an hour drive for me, but I make sure to get a Mozza-burger whenever I'm in town.
And driving in a Bus, I'd avoid The N.Y. Thruway. You get run over doing any less than 80

I see you'll be passing right by my neck of the woods, Kingsport TN. If you're going to head up the Blue Ridge, plan on camping at Bears Den. Then stop at Luray caverns.

Looks like an awesome route. Ditto on Fall Creek Falls ... great place and bring your clubs. Have fun.
