Does anyone know if a 1700 Type 4 engine (W code) can be upgraded, without spending a fortune, to 2 litres.....or, will the engine case not be suitable for the larger capacity cylinders......i guess, i'd need new cylinder heads, would i? Thanks, Adrian |

How to Rebuild Your Air-Cooled Engine by Tom Wilson covers it all in depth from Amazon or www.books4car.com Got to do your research, but yes they do cost a fortune to hot rod! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

A stock build isn't exactly hot rodding an engine. A type 4 case is a Type 4 case is a Type 4 case. variances in cases were only a result of the vehicles they were to be installed in. For example, Porsche 914 engines did not have the oil fill tube coming from the front of the engine, so the filler tube hole was not machined into the case. Simple things like that. Nothing structurally different about any of the cases, the exception being the European "VO" magnesium case.
The only difference between the 2.0 and 1.7 is the crank (71mm vs 66mm), pistons/cylinders (94mm vs 90mm), and the heads. THat being said, 1.7 heads can easily be machined to the 1.8/2.0 size. Just open up the registers to 105mm. Anyone with a mill and a fly-cutting bit can do this. It doesn't take much time, and is not very expensive. Reground 2.0 cranks are out there at good prices. European Motorworks has an exchange program for cams and lifters if yours are worn out. 40 bucks for the cam, 40 bucks for a set of eight lifters. Fresh bearings are available at many online stores.
All in all, a stock build is not a huge investment in capital when you already have most of the parts. Now, if you were to "hot rod" the motor with 96mm or larger cylinders, a performance camshaft, rods, etc...Now you are talking about a small fortune! _________________ 1800 Type 4 Berrien 295

thanks very much for the replies....i only intend a mild tune...i am only just learning that not all Type 4 engines went into 411/412's & 914's.....wouldn't 1.7 heads have smaller valves/ports/chambers than 2.0? |

Yes they did....but one of the best mods with a 1.7l is to install new valves seats...which should be done anyway....and use 41mmX 35mm or 42mm X 36mm...which is as large as you can get.
A great set ip for a 1.7l in a 411/412/914 is stock domed pistons...get rid of head gasket and cylinder base shim, this will give compression of about 8.45:1 with an .040" deck. Use a web 73 camshaft, a 2.0 bus TB (5mm larger), a mild header exhaust like a t-bird or a VW heritage stainless t-bird style exhaust with a better than stock ignition like pertronix module with their 42kv coil.....and a better fuel pump for stability and a lot of detail tuning. This will yield about 90-92 hp at the rear wheel. About a 10 hp bump....wuth much better throttle response. Ray |
