Well maybe not a barn find but sea container find none the less! After rebuilding my '67 bug with my dad 13 years ago he finally decided to bite the bullet and buy a bug for himself. We got word of a split sitting in a sea container and had to check it out. Apparently it had been in storage for 40ish years. From paperwork we have and info from the previous owner's wife, it looks like it was placed in storage in 1974, maybe give or take some years?...

The car had been in the process of being rebuilt. From the looks of various parts, I think the previous owner was shooting for a Cal-look. The car was re-sprayed but the paint is still in great condition. I'm thinking it's not the original paint color though.

Plans for the car is to first get it into a driver status then start enjoying cruising around with my '67. Any opinions on a Cal-resto look or going back to OG status?

Some pics for your enjoyment... please pipe up and let us know what's original and what's not. Sorry in advance for the randomness of the photo groups.

Also came with this fog lamp. Says GE on it. Doesn't look like anything too special...

The door glass is correct for 1950-52 cars.

Thanks for the help, RareAir. The handle is L shaped. Kinda hard to tell from the pic. I'll grab some more pics next time I'm up at my parent's house. Good to know it's correct tho!

Looks like you've got a good almost complete car which is a huge bonus. Only thing missing that I've spotted so far is the luggage rails. As for the speedo and clock pods, though correct split era stuff, not correct on your car as yours is a deluxe model, ( chrome trim and bumpers, mostly ivory interior components, batwing steering wheel and most importantly the crotch cooler vents ), the pods should also be ivory in color. However, congrats on a great find and welcome to splitsville.

The headlights are '63 to '66. Engine looks 36hp but with some later 40hp stuff on it. The Hi/Lo beam switch is later too, should have a round base. Nice find though, lots of hard to find things are still there! Good Luck!

Thanks for the info gentlemen. As far as the headlights go, what should I be looking for? If it's just the lens and not the housing, the car came with 6 extra headlight lenses.

Thanks Porsche904. The car came with 6 extra headlight lenses so I'll have to check if any match a 52.

looks like a pretty solid car. I would just redo the interior with split correct fabric and do whatever is necessary to get it on the road. Get it back on the road and enjoy the hell out of it.

Little bit of an update... Finally got the split registered and in my dad's name. Cleaned out the interior, inventoried and organized all of the extra parts we got with the bug. Keep an eye out for extra head light rings, lenses, and various other parts for sale...Mostly oval and early 60's parts.

Next up is working on the wiring and pulling the engine and trans. Any of you guys have info on wiring harnesses or diagrams? I've seen harnesses from wiring works but the only one available for this car says 52 1/2-53. Based on the VIN, this looks like a July 52 car. Will this harness work? I'm assuming is maybe only for Zwitters. As always, thanks for the help.

John Henry makes a great harness for early split windows. I have installed several of his harnesses on 50-52 splits. Comes with very detailed instructions to install it. He advertise's here on the samba. I will be doing another one on a July 52 car soon.
