|
|
Hi,
My 1950 beetle is running a 1959 30hp engine (I have the 25hp engine block but its seized) and I was wondering if I purchased the repo Split beetle heater boxes, would they fit on the 30hp engine?
From my understand are the flaps to turn the heat on and off on the shoe boxes? (tin ware)
I don't have the shoe boxes on my 25hp, I assume they are hard to source?
Any help would be grateful.
Thanks
Rob

The pre march 51 boxes are completely different, both shoe and heater boxes. The early ones have the flaps in the shoebox, so you cannot really mix and match.
Finding early shoeboxes is near impossible _________________ '51 Beetle Deluxe

Thanks guys, I will keep searching.
I assume these are later show boxes?http://www.kaefer-nostalgie.com/content/air-intake-boxes-25hp
Do you know if it's damaging for the engine if you disconnected the heat boxes to the pipe that connects them to the body of the beetle, would it over heat the engine?
Thanks |

As posted above, these heater and shoe boxes are very, very hard to find. I built up an engine for my '50 years ago which I have since sold, you can see pics of the engine tin here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=309726
The shoe boxes should have the 2 flaps, one square and one oval one in the "throat" to the heater box. It will have 3 bolt bores in the rear facing flange (25hp) and the X-plate flange. It may or may not have the cutout for the thermostat bracket, depending on how old it is.
There are some 36hp versions of this box that I have yet to figure out what they were used on. I have one, and I think there is one in the classifieds now. It has the 2 flaps, but it has a 2 bolt upper tin flange (36hp) and no X plate flange.
The heater boxes have no flaps, and there are at least 3 different styles of them, depending how old. They are being reproduced in Europe now, and the repros are very good. They are also very similar to the Porsche 356 boxes which use a bigger diameter J pipe. It is possible to "convert" 356 boxes to VW use, but it is fairly tedious if you want to get the accurate details. I think there are some details on that conversion somewhere in the "Zarwerks Spy Cam" thread... _________________ John Henry

I am still lost here, sorry guys. Some of the old heater shoe boxes look some much alike to me. But some have two holes on the top lip and some have three? some only one. Look at these pics. Are these 25hp or 36hp? I think the picture that has three in a row, the two on the left side might be 25hp? Tim

I'm also uploading pictures of my shoeboxes for identification
I have tried the search function and I've stared quite q bit of pictures but they all seem to look almost the same to me I have looked at this http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=309726 thread and it looks like the top 2 pictures below look the same as these? So are these two correct for April '51 and older? Getting really confused here...
So any insight on what year shoboxes these are? One set with flaps and one set without flaps.
Thanks in advance!

Thanks a ton Mika!
Just to double check: both sets (with and w/o flaps) are from April 51 to 53, right? |

See this page:

9/52 should have the "squarehead" boxes shown on that page. They should have the M6 Kamax Nut and bolts (not screws) holding the halves together. _________________ John Henry
