It's ashamed that no one around Charlotte (So far) wants to work on my Bug that has minimal body problems... Even in today's economy. I have spoke with three different shops and none want to tackle a "Restoration" job. I guess they are all looking for insurance jobs on newer vehicles. Any help??? |

Kelly at metwiz does metal work, not bodywork or paint.. top notch work from the pictures I've seen, but he doesn't restore cars... whatever shop you might be interested in, go to the buyer/seller feedback section of this site to look at their feedback first... There is one shop in North carolina that is to be avoided at all costs... _________________

I'm resurrecting this thread 4 years later with the same question. We're looking for a recommended place near Charlotte, NC to repaint our '71 Westy. That van was saved from a garage fire, and it was in neat condition before. We stripped it down to clean all the damage done by the heat and the gallons of water spilled by the fire brigade. But the paint has bubbles and marks, and now that the poor thing is completely bare, we might as well get it fully repainted.
Thanks for your help, feel free to use MPs is name dropping / shaming is not the policy on The Samba... |

Look up the "custom" paint and body shops. Not the collision repair shops. |

Thanks, that's a good lead.
I'm not familiar with prices in this country -- I live in France most of the year, never owned a VW in the US before that one. For a full paint job with not much bodywork involved, and van delivered to the bodyshop fully stripped, could you give me a rough estimate (or brackets) on how much it usually costs? That will help when I speak to places.
Thanks! |

You would have to call the shops themselves. Most will tell you that they work on a time and materials basis, because they don't know what will be involved until they get into a project. Some will provide an estimate, but only after they see the car. At a minimum, you can ask for their shop rate, get a range that others have spent on similar projects, and see some of their restorations. If you have a specific scope of work and are sure that nothing else will turn up, then you might be able to get a better-constrained number. You should be clear on whether you are looking for a driver or show-quality work, because some paint jobs take many more hours of labor than others. Another thing to consider is how busy they are and when they will be able to do the work. _________________ 1973 green Super Beetle

There is a VW restoration shop in Charlotte off I 85. Small family owned shop they do business as MonkeyNuts. They also have a website where you get more information. I have been doing all my own body work and now understand why shops are so expensive It's just not the hours of labor but materials are very expensive. |
