I got to see the engine run yesterday. She fired right up! There is an issue with the new carb though as it doesn't want to idle properly. It's a Brazilian made one and my mechanic says they are great carbs but it's a crap shoot, either you get one that is perfect or one that is shite right out the box. |

So, got her up, running and have been driving the hell out of her.
Used a 30/31 with .009 distributor (rejected the carb).
She seems to run rich as hell and fuel is seeping from the carb. Damned if it ain't something. |

The Frantz oil filter uses a roll of toilet paper to filter the oil! Unless yours is different that was their claim to fame. _________________ 1967 bug recovering from a PO

No shit? That's cool! I actually removed it rather than having it reinstalled. My Mechanic thought the lines were too small and that the low oil flow might be what caused the engine failure before.
On another note I changed my transaxle fluid today and was absolutely shocked at what I found. The drain plug looked like a damn mushroom from all of the metal flakes on it and the fluid looked like liquid graphite.
It shifts better now to say the least but I am curious... Is it normal for the VW to only want to smoothly shift into first with idle speed? If I to give it has I have to feather clutch to get it to catch or else it hops and skips all over the damn place then grabs and starts moving well. |

Holy smokes, I haven't posted in this in a while.
For the curious,
Since September I have:
changed out the rear bearings (making the puller was a pain)
Installed a new generator and regulator
Rebuilt the wiper motors
Transaxle fluid change
Got a wicker shelf installed
Chased a few electrical gremlins.
I drive it 70 miles round trip three times a week for school unless the weather is nasty.
I still need to:
Buy new wiper posts
New wiper arms (that don't suck)
New windshield because the existing one is so chipped and ,we're it is hard to see
Look at a disk brake conversion. |

having carried an M16A1 and A2 for 18 years of my 21 years I like your rear window decal. I wonder how many "get it". |
I've had a few ARFCOM members comment on it, most don't have a clue what it is unless they have enjoyed scraping carbon off one of the damn things! |

Hey Crash. Very nice work on that '67. Oh, thank you for your service from another vet. I'll admit I had no clue on that rear window decal, til Bill May id'd it. Yep, try dealing with a private when he/she gets a cheapo q-tip jammed in the gas tube on that bolt assy, on a sunday evening!
Regarding that Frantz oil filter assy. It has small hoses (3/16 or 1/4 inch) on it because it is a by-pass filter, allowing maybe 10% of the oil to get filtered thus not robbing the engine bearings. As I recall, the toilet paper rolls have changed over the years. The gold standard was the Scotts 1000 roll, but one has to assure the ID is a certain measurement. One can still buy parts for them. When I was a "dealer boy" down in the aero space area of Los Angeles, many engineer types would have them mounted under the rear seat, opposite side from the battery. Currently, on my 71 bus I have a Baldwin bypass filter alongside the full flow filter. The Baldwin oil filter has a .032" restrictor in the filter. Replacement is easier. One can read up on these types of filters on bobistheoilguy.com. They have a dedicated section for these. These filters aren't for everyone as opinions differ.
Hope this helps, hooah, Bill. |

Update time:
Redid on of my rear axle seals that started leaking
Replaced brake lines from the MC to the reservoir
New steering dampener
Made a burl shift handle and guage plates
Need to replace the steering link joints
Will post pics of the burl once installed.
Every time one thing needs fixing I find three more. |
