Awesome pic! Thanks for the comparison shot. Guess I'll be adding a master cylinder to the cost of this mod. Love my Type 3. I love my Type 3. I love my type 3.........I do.

Here is what I had done with the bug duel circuit master cylinder on my 66 bug. I used I single circuit fluid tank and made a manifold to break it into a duel circuit. Sense it is on a side that has no pressure it worked flawlessly.

I like your setup quite a lot, but it'd be slightly harder to accomplish on a T3, since the clearance is a lot tighter with the tie rods. I wonder if it could be made to work, though...

Here's what I did for my 65:

Since I had a 68 parts car, I used the master cylinder reservoir and hard lines from it. There is a small lip on the car's body that keeps the reservoir from falling down, provided that it's held back and to the outside of the car. A simple bracket bolted to the top left beam clamp bolt accomplishes this. It's not ideal, since you have to pull the fuel tank to get at the reservoir, but it works for now.

I'm gathering parts for the wide 5 disc swap on my 65 Notch, plan to use the AC Industries kit outlined in this thread. I'm like the idea of using a late T3 master cylinder rather than the T1 mc that comes in the kit. I'm leary of many new parts, too many bad new parts out there. Can anyone vouch for the quality of any of the new mc's available? Another option is an NOS ATE I saw listed in the classifieds, is that a good brand?

I used the AC Industries kit on my 64 T-34. I didn't use the bug master cylinder though (it's still on the shelf). For the master cylinder, I picked up a used one (late style), and had Jim Adney rebuild it. I also found that I needed the longer "later" style push rod. Here's a couple of pics of my set up.

I've got a question about this mod and didn't see it in the tread
Could the stock 4 lug t3 rotor be replaced with the with the bug wide 5 rotor and keep the stock caliper and mount ?

No, it won't fit inside the caliper. That's why you use the disc kit, and modify the 4 lug spindle, as the kit moves the caliper out the nessessary distance (away from the axle centerline), and resets the offset (moves the caliper outward toward). You need both for it to work.

Believe me, IF it was that simple, everyone would do it. Shocked

I was able to get a brand new made in Germany ATE dual circuit m/c from Orielly Auto Parts. Got it the same day. Was $220 which is only a little more than some NOS ones I saw at the time. And it is new rubber inside. I don't like the idea of NOS rubber for anything.

It appears no one is using a backing plate (splash guard) with this setup, correct?

That's correct! Nobody has tackled this portion of the conversion that I know of....would love to see it done! But for now, we are running without them.

How did the rubber hose fit coming out of those calipers? Mine seem to be all over the tie rods and/or rubbing the wheel well....the friggin' hose hole comes out the top/side instead of the normal spot straight toward the MC. How did you handle this? I'm considering trying to find a 90 fitting to point that hose in more, but I dunno how easy it will be to find said fitting.

If anyone needs the centering ring for the EMPI kit, contact me-I have one that flyinglow made and sent to me. I don't need it anymore.

You finished your conversion? I've got 1 too, but my son wants to borrow it. It sure took all of the guess work out of centering the caliper mount. Cool

I actually wound up buying a car that was already converted (the 64 S) and the 65 has an Airkewld disc kit waiting to be installed-since they fit on the drum spindles, I don't need the spacer.

Anyone have a spacer that was talked about for alignment to drill holes?

If you are referring to the spacer for the EMPI/AC Industries kit - I have one. PM me.

I just read through this thread again and I have a question that I hope someone could answer. I’m looking at the ac industries wide five kit and they show one for 66 big and one for 67-68 big. Is there a prefered kit? I looked and didn’t see anyone post which kit they ordered. Thanks in advance for your help.

I hope these links work. So cal imports has 1966 as one kit and 67-68 as a different kit.
